my theory is that reviewers are starved for a halfway decent game after ff14
even sonic's better than ff now

haha you fell for it
sega sticks sonic on a product and you go to play it
battered wife much
Man, if that were really true I'd have bought it when it hit the Wii and bitched all about it rather than download a demo.
That guy above me though, he's definitely one to watch.
Hathen: If that were true I think Medal of Honor would actually be doing decently.

If I enjoy it then I have a pleasant surprise. If I don't enjoy it then after a few minutes playing I have more ammo to fire at how far Sonic's fallen. Pretty win-win.

Tried the demo. I'll just paste what I said in an IRC room, albit slightly cleaned up.
Quote
[18:49:37] <Eusis> Ok, I played Sonic.
[18:49:45] <Eusis> The game feels sluggish and the physics don't feel right at all.
[18:50:08] <Eusis> For example, there is no forward momentum in jumps.
[18:50:15] <Eusis> If I let go of the D-Pad I stop
on a dime
. In mid air.
I guess it might be worth getting on sale if people like the game on a whole, but this demo definitely isn't satisfying enough, and doesn't offer a semblance of the sensation of speed I should be getting from a Sonic game.
Played just the demo too. I agree, the physics do feel weird...not horrible...just, different. I think the speed is about the same as the old Sonic games, but his animations make it seem slower. It "feels" like it takes too long for him to get going.
The demo was really really short, but whatev. I'll be buying the full version =D

Just played the demo.
If you stop during an incline sonic just stands still while making a 90º angle between himself and the ground, it's looks so fucking stupid that it isn't even funny.
If you stop pressing forward while in the air you just stop mid air and fall straight down.
When you start running the way sonic gains momentum just doesn't feel right.
Seriously, what the fuck is this shit?
Also, no demo on the european PSN, had to log into my american account. I mean, really?

So they stuck it back into development for like, 3 months, and it sounds like they didn't change a damn thing as far the basic gameplay (physics etc) is concerned?
You've done it again, Sega.

I can't get used to this. When you jump, if you stop pressing forward, it's like sonic hits an invisible wall, I'm so used to calculate my jumps like in the original game that it frustrates me to no end, who the FUCK came up with this bullshit? But the hilarious part is that most reviews don't mention this. Guys calling themselves oldschool sonic fans don't fucking mention this in their reviews. Sega must be bribing the hell out of these guys. All they had to do was not touch the gameplay.

Wow, I'm glad I played the demo first, sonic jumps like a brick in this game! It's a platformer idiots! How could you screw up the most fundamental gameplay element in the genre?

I wouldn't say that the odd jumping screws up the platforming gameplay. It's just not classic Sonic physics, which on one hand is dissapointing seeing as they put all kinds of touches on the game to make it feel like old-school Sonic but on the other hand, it still works, just differently. Sonic jumps more like Megaman than Sonic in this one lol.

Yes and no.
The way they worked the jumping makes it impossible to fly through levels, which is what Sonic is all about. I really just feel like the homing function is what breaks it more than the physics now that I've played it again. Still, it breaks the flow, which kills the speed, and, for me, ruins the game

Yeah, how dare they add modern improvements to an old-style game? Those fucking idiots.
Not sure what tot hink about the jumping though. Still ambivalent.

For comparison's sake, a fan made game, of which a demo is incoming.

Not only does it look great but you can tell that it plays just right.
