You have stats and you can buy equipment and it's somewhat plot focused. What do YOU think?

Symphony of the Night is totally an action-RPG. The only difference between it and other more proverbial action-RPGs like Seiken Densetsu or something is that it's a side scroller. It has all the necessary trappings that define an RPG to traditionalists. Stats/leveling up, equipment, exploration (SOTN does not have linear movement), and there is a story to follow (but a lot of RPGs have pretty shallow plots anyway.)

I've always looked at SotN as an action-rpg simply because it allows you to gain experience, and thus get stronger a la an rpg, while the action itself was, well, action oriented. :p

I really can't picture Action-RPG as a game category. that's like saying Ketchup-flavour Mayonnaise.
can you give me 5 games that falls under the same category of action-rpg as SotN?

Dude, action RPGs have been around
forever
. Falcom's entire
Ys
series is action-RPG, so is
Secret of Mana
,
Crystalis
for the NES,
Landstalker
on the Genesis,
Diablo
on the PC, and hell, your favourite series,
Kingdom Hearts
is an action-RPG.
What defines an action-RPG is having a real-time battle system which requires immediate button presses for input. Just because it's a little untraditional looking doesn't mean something isn't an RPG. Symphony of the Night is most definitely an RPG, and an action-RPG.
Also, ketchup-flavoured mayonnaise is an essential part for Thousand Island Dressing, as well as Fry Sauce. So it does exist. :P

LOL... this is a snarky answer, but you deserve it for that ketchup mayonnaise shenanigans (which Mark already called you out on).
1. Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)
2. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (GBA)
3. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
4. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
5. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS)
And I can give you a sixth!
6. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)
Yes, this is entirely amusing to me. :)

I did have this argument with him in real life, and given that he's fairly new to RPGs as a genre, it's somewhat reasonable that Castlevania would seem a little out of left field. He's not a hardcore gamer, so he's still new to a lot of the lingo and whatnot.

I once knew a kid who though the only games that were RPG's actually had the letters "RPG" in the title.
So as far as he was concerned, the only RPG that existed was Mario RPG. He was literally flabbergasted when I told him that Final Fantasy 4 (which he had been playing) was an RPG. He didn't believe me.
