I can't believe that people are calling this author a 'douchebag' with 'no social abilities' when a good deal of Asian philosophy revolves around hating anything - or anyone - that is different from themselves.

To be fair, I was mostly calling Tim Rogers an autistic douchebag based on him being Tim Rogers. I didn't really read the article because it's way too long for anyone to actually read all the way through.

Or else it's just guys with huge hair and impossible weapons shouting jargon. Long ago, manga aspired to be like Dragon Ball Z: graphically iconic, with a story more coherent than it probably needed to be.

Right..so hes complaining about anime being about guys with huge hair and shouting....then goes on to praise DBZ?  WTF?

Still, the skimming I did of it, despite being really whiny in display, was interesting.  I don't know alot about Japan to be honest, and it's curious to see his views, as someone who has lived there for awhile.  And the responses on here of others who have been there or know those who do.  I mean I know tidbits here and there, and some things I have heard can be disturbing, but thats really anywhere you look.

He does definitely come off as very high and mighty though, and I don't care for that so much.  I mean hell, that he eats "organic" vegetables just strikes me as douchebag, because at least here in America, in my opinion, "organic" doesnt really mean shit except that you have to pay more for it, but people will go and be like "Oh yeah, I eat only organic stuff, sure it costs more, but im not getting all those chemicals and blah blah in me, so im better than you"  Which I think is shit because while im sure some stuff is removed, unless you grow it yourself, I don't feel anything is simply "organic".

But meh, the smoking thing is a shame though, I mean I don't try and knock people who do smoke, cause for whatever reason (usually stupid but *shrug*) they are now addicted to it, and that kinda shit can be hard to break.  Still I don't like having it blown in my face, and I certainly don't care for the smell.  I know alot of people who feel very upset about not being able to smoke as freely in the US anymore, and in some ways I guess I can understand their feelings on the subject, but still when its something that can so easily effect other people, in smell alone, it gets hard to feel much sympathy.  If I let my garbage get really bad, im gonna get reported to the management, but if I were to complain about someone smoking in the apartment next to me and the smell coming through the wall, the best I can get is "Get an air purifier."

Still if he is so unhappy there, I would really recommend for him to move somewhere he liked better, if such a place exists.  I do know some people who live and went to japan, not super well, but well enough, and they enjoyed their experience.  A couple were teachers of english or a year or so.  But again maybe Tokyo is just so much worse than other areas, since I don't think anyone I knew was at Tokyo themselves.

The idea that anyone who's different or unique is some kind of freak is an ideology that is fucking abhorrent to me, and should be to anybody on this board as well.

I was not so aware of this, and thats sad.  I mean I've heard that there is a lot of conformity and greater workings type of thing, but not to the degree your describing Leyviur.

Hating people that are different than themselves is universal, not just Asian. I'm half white and half Korean and when I was younger, I received a lot of racism from the white kids (which is 99% of the population where I went to school,) and no doubt I would've gotten the same treatment if I grew up in Korea.

To add to the overall thread as a whole: don't like it, get the fuck out. Go live in a place where you'll hate it the least, since every country has its own fair share of problems.

And just for shits and giggles, I hate Japan for having censored porn still. They started releasing uncensored around five years ago, and censored shit still comes out.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they're so used to it being censored that they seriously prefer it that way.

This thread is why the guy is employed. He has the ability to get site traffic.

Good on him, but this is why Journalism 101 was the most vomit-inducing thing I've ever been subjected to.

What you feel and what is actually factual are two entirely different things.  There are many reasons people choose to buy organic.  For some, it could be environmental issues.  For others, it may be a tool used to aid in their establishing social hierarchy because they're mentally still in high school.  When I choose to go to a farmer's market in my local area and buy organic produce there, it is because it tastes better.  It's not even a contest.  My homemade spaghetti sauce tastes as good as it does because of organic tomatoes from the local area.  The tomatoes in the supermarket aren't up to snuff.  The fact that the farmer, a position greatly underpaid and unappreciated despite its importance, gets a considerably larger share of the profits by buying direct from him/her makes it a two-birds-one-stone deal.

I don't know what smug fuck turned you into an anti-organic crusader, but you don't come off as any better than the individual(s) you seem to dislike.

I don't really have a problem with that article-- he's just been in a foreign place for a few years and a lot of stuff there has ticked him off. It happens. He's been used to a different lifestyle for most of his life.

I've been studying in the U.K. for about three years now and I'm pretty sure that I could write an equally derogatory article about this place if prompted. But I'd probably be inclined to say some good things too...

Did not read all of it. Unnecessarily verbose, which probably gives it the image of attention-whoring. Well, it's a column. Go figure.

I could not appreciate the links he was drawing from Japan's culture to video gaming, because he did seem to belittle parts of the culture unusual to him such as office relations. Did not like how his rant tumbled into why he disliked Final Fantasy XIII. Bash the cultural differences then bash the games?

Some of them I agree with - I cannot for the life of me, find much of anime funny or sexually alluring with its borderline pedophilia. I am not friends with people who like this stuff (not because I have a homing device) - but because literally all the guys I've met who do like the borderline pedophilia anime at college at like little fucking girls. Others who do like it but don't act like little fucking girls obviously do not bother me on an associate level.

Either way, if he thinks Japan is supposed to accommodate him, then he's clearly mistaken. With all of his "thorough" observation, he should realize this.

There are things that attract me to Japan, like its scenery, and gaming communities. Don't believe I'd like to expatriate there for multiple racial and cultural differences that I am not willing to accept just to say that I live in Japan.

I didn't know there were adult males who fantasized about being little girls who are exploited sexually.  Is this a common trait?

That would be Tim Rogers' entire career in a nutshell. God, what a shitty writer.

My apologies Parn, I suppose I worded it wrong, and people like yourself who are into the organic thing, im fine with, I just know alot of people who try to lord it over everyone else, hence why it bugs me.  And as I said, again probably poorly, if its grown by yourself or someone you know grew it, and doesnt come in a container at the grocery store labeled Organic (Again not all things labeled organic are automatically not organic, just..I feel there is some sleazyness going on, maybe thats stupid of me), then yeah its great, and I totally agree.

And I grew up in a community with alot of farmers, so I agree with you on that as well.  I just wrote what I wrote in a stupid ass way.

In other words, it's like that episode of South Park where the "smug" cloud was formed by all the people who bought hybrid cars, right?

Seriously? For the guys that I met who are Little Women (yadda yadda gender yadda yadda) do share that interest. Hell, if they acted like grown women, maybe I wouldn't be so disturbed.

It's all good.  I figured that's not what you really meant, which is why I didn't go into trolling mode like I usually do.  You're right about the attitude with a fair number of folks who buy organic.  I don't know why it turned into a fashion statement, but it happened.

Ew, that's even worse than the people who throw in random Japanese phrases arbitrarily because it's the cool thing to do.  We're not all like that though, honest.  Granted I try to do my best to avoid anime fans because for the most part, the folks into it have a vastly different value set than mine, regardless of what odd behaviors they may have.
