Vanille has possibly the most annoying voice I've ever heard in a game.
Time to fix that.
I *did* say possibly.

I was never fond of Yuna. SHe had the soft, sweet voice... but she also sounded like she was new to the language.

kimahri ronso, hated his voice for some reason. Whenever he spoke the only thing I heard was, "Me kimahri ronso" in the most belligerent voice possible. I just wanted him to stay mute.

Yuna was absolute rubbish.
Vanille had some butchered Australian accent, as did Fang.
Edit: Oh god are you Australian Dice
this changes many things

Picked this up again and holy shit. The entire game is a giant dungeon crawl with some pretty cutscenes mixed in. All they had to do was throw in some nice exploration bits and some towns and variety.. ugh
I have to say, you're exactly right.
I just got to Nautilus and I was expecting to be able to do .... something.
Even if they threw in a little PS1 style mini game...anything. Don't tell me how much fun the place is and then have me chase a fucking chocobo in the park.
Ugh.

I get the impression that Toriyama heard someone criticizing
Final Fantasy X-2's
hyperabundance of pointless minigames, and it
really
got stuck in his craw. So when it came time to work on
Final Fantasy XIII
, he decided that the whole thing would be composed of running, fighting, cutscenes, and nothing else. XIII is a big, spiteful
BET YOU MISS MY MINIGAMES
NOW
, DOUCHEFACE
signed by Toriyama.

The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XIII: The World is a Tube.
It's funny because it's true.

That was a fantastic read, anything that needed to be said was said and aired. Its just disparaging that its taken so long (as earlier pointed out in the thread) for people to take off their rose tinted glasses.

An example of an Eidolon cutscene and battle might go like:
Fang: Hey Vanille, I've been thinking. What about the stuff about those things?"
Vanille: What? No!! Fang! How can you say that?! Don't talk like that Fang, please! Fang, don't say things like AAAAAGHHH OH MY GOD LOOK IT'S A HIDEOUS TWENTY-ARMED DEMON THAT WE HAVE TO FIGHT NOW!

*Remember how the RPG used to be considered the thinking man's video game and the FPS was merely crass gore porn for the hoi polloi? Man, how times have changed.
*Remember when Square's games placed you in strange settings with strange people and encouraged you to explore and engage with the environments and NPCs in order to understand the story instead of just pointing you towards a collection of automatically updated in-game Wikipedia articles? That was fun, wasn't it?
These are the best points of the article.

It's full of great points. I like how he defined the resource management and exploring dungeons when people argued linearity.
And you can't argue about "Mash Button > Paradigm Shift > Mash Button > Paradigm Shift > Mash Button > Paradigm Shift > Mash Button > Paradigm Shift > Mash Button > Paradigm Shift >"
