Xenogears is the best one.

I very rarely play through RPG games more than once. For that reason, Earthbound gets the spot just because of the sheer number of playthroughs I've done of the game, and I've bothered to talk to the majority of NPCs most of my playthroughs. Lufia 2 is a close second in that regard.

My list of favortes:
Final Fantasy VI (never finished thru, corupted rom)
Persona series (P2 eternal punishment is best, even thru never finished that too and now I've lost the memory card that had my saves)
Crono series (Trigger better than Cross)
Tales of: Phantaisa, Symphonia
Ar tonelico series (Ar tonelico 2 was my fave., Cloche fan)
Secret of Mana 3

Best ever for me with my mind set right now is: Ar tonelico 2

I'm gonna sound like a newbie but here goes:

FFXII (yes, that FFXII) I'm in the minority that thinks this game is awesome. Well-crafted story of political intrigue and the gambit system is great. (Oh, and I have played all the FF's from FFV-FFX)

Xenosaga: Episode III- Good culmination to a story full of philosophical themes, which is something JRPGs rarely do. The battle system is also the best of the series.

Suikoden III- I played Suikoden I and II, but Suikoden III is just so elegant. Not to mention that the characters are all really well developed and the political story is top-notch. The battle system is great fun. The only thing that I didn't like was controlling characters in pairs. Other than that, awesome.

Story: Final Fantasy X

Gameplay: Valkyria Chronicles

Best Series: Suikoden

Complete Package: Chrono Cross

There´s never gonna be a consensus about who´s the better one, but if they ever collect all those games and make it into a single package/collection then that would clearly be the best collection of JRPG ever....

Complete Package: Chrono Cross

OMG finally someone else who appreciates a decent game, everytime i mention it the conversation usually goes something like

"ever played Chrono cross?"
" yeah didnt like it, too many characters Blah blah blah, the original was waaaaay better"
"you suck"
"no you suck, i KILL YOU!!!"

fingers crossed they port or remake it (though last i heard it looked pretty bleak)

my choices would be

FFX
Lost odyssey
Lunar (sega CD version of course)

When I first played CC I hated it but then I went back and played it and like it more than CT and now I still like it more than CT, but I don't really like CT that much anymore, and I'm not huge on CC either.

The battle system, despite having neat mechanics, is slow as fuck, and attack animations take way too long. I mean like, the spells and unique character techs in particular, but also enemy attacks.

Also, like CT, the game is easy to the point of stupid.

The removal of combos in CC doesn't really bother me, because CC has about as many *actually useful* combos as CT. I also appreciate how much elemental weaknesses actually mattered, and that status attacks worked. I just wish the game was hard enough to, like, you know. Require them.

And the plot is admittedly sort of out there, but uh, it's a JRPG. If a JRPG doesn't have a plot that goes completely insane, it's probably from the 80s.
