Seriously, it's like a cancer. Has anybody else noticed how intent people seem to be on 3D shit now? Once it's in our TVs, will games start to standardize jump-out-at-you graphics with head tracking? Will the baby's toy become the one you have to use your hands on?
Damn the future is some sick ass shit.

Nintendo's new product is pretty thin on details, but it sounds like they might be using an eye-tracking assisted autostereoscopic solution, which could be really cool if done right. The big problem with autostereoscopy is that the proper 3D image can really only be seen by one person at a time but this is much less of an issue for a handheld device.
I hope this is an actual successor to the DS as it's about time Nintendo updated the underlying hardware as well...

I agree with Jim Sterling on Destructoid and secretly hope it's just a standard DSi with a cardboard cutout of Miyamoto that pops up when you open it.

The 3D tvs suck, imo. I'm rather unimpressed. Really trying to withhold judgment until Panasonic's true 3D comes out though.

Note to all console manufacturers: If I have to wear glasses to play games on your console then you can forget about getting my money next gen.
At least Nintendo appears to have avoided that with their new handheld.

Yeah, 3D effects are making a big splash on the world now, for better or for worse. I hope the screen is fairly sizable, but not necessarily at a DSi XL size. At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing it at E3 this June.

The industry is a buisness, and businesses want to make money. If they push 3D as the new thing to have, people will have to upgrade all their equipment to join the crowd.
The DS annoys me with some games that are forced to use the stylus when the control pad would be just fine, same with the Wii mote when a classic controller would give you the same results. Now we have the PS3 sensing crap and the natal.
Everyone needs a bandwagon to jump on to push their product.

If porn goes 3D and I all of a sudden see jizz flying at me, then I'm just done with 3D.

So, I just had this conversation with a friend:
Friend while looking at a panflet: Man, these new 3D tvs are really expensive!
Me: Yeah, they want to ride the avatar hype, it really made people aware of 3D.
Friend: I saw it in 3D and really didn't notice much of a diference.
Me: Really? Where did you watch it?
Friend: Oh, I downloaded the 3D version from a torrent site, borrowed the glasses from a friend who brought them from the theater and watched it on my pc, don't know what all the fuzz is about.
Well, turns out he downloaded a torrent with anaglyph 3D that you're supposed to watch with those old red/green cardboard glasses. It seems like a lot of people have been uploading this crap, it looks really terrible, my friend actually thought he saw the exact same thing people saw in the theater. Sigh...

3D adds little to the fundamental process of moviemaking, and similarly little to the scope of audience appreciation. It'll remain a gimmick in that realm and probably pass out of popular use in the next few years. There are a few select titles which may continue to make use of it as a major visual component (TRON Legacy for instance), but not many.
Now gaming on the other hand? There's potential there, particularly for FPS titles and racing games.

Heh, yeah. Pretty much have to update a good chunk of the ol' A/V equipment if you want to take advantage of it. It's lameeee-o.
