SFIV isn't 3D, it's 2.5D. Games like Soul Calibur and Tekken are 3D.
MVC3 is going to be 2.5D.

I meant the graphics, obviously. The polygonal characters from SFIV can`t touch the 2D finesse of SFIII: The 3rd Strike, Garou: Mark of the Wolves and the likes.

Since when do graphics influence how well a fighting game plays?

Well... They used to. 2D-to-3D franchises didn't work so well for a couple of generations there. :P

What if I happen to prefer classic fighting franchises like Street Fighter to remain sprite-based? Polygonal graphics aren`t the logical evolution of 2D graphics. Sprites have their own aesthetics and appeal. The only reason SFIV even went 3D is because it`s both cheaper to make and more acceptable for the mainstream crowd.

3D needed to reach the level of at least the last generation to be sufficient for Street Fighter-style fighters, I'm pretty sure if you tried to make a game like SFIV on the PS1 it would not turn out well. I DO prefer 2D visuals, but 3D is more advantageous on modern consoles for a multitude of reasons, and I doubt Marvel would really like it if their big HD crossover fighter weren't in the more marketable 3D.
Also, Capcom HAS said they plan to go forward with "2.5D" fighters, so everyone will probably have to resign themselves to this.

I found SFIV played just as smoothly as the older 2d versions...

...And I was fearing we'd see the whole High School Musical cast in it, due to Disney buying Marvel. Thank god that ain't the case....yet.
Being serious now......Oh my god, it's Chris!
Now I want to see one of the Breath of Fire Ryus' in it!

I imagine making a 2D game with a massive cast like this would be crazy expensive in this day and age.

Well, SNK is doing it with KOFXIII. I'm not sure what the total amount of characters is, but it's going to be a lot. How expensive is it really to make a 2D fighting game from the ground up? I'm curious. Especially today when the fans would want HI-RES, HD sprites.

I think the problem with the 2.5D thing has more to do with the inexperience with 3D at the time and less to do with the actual graphics.

That could be it, but I get the impression that the PS1 couldn't handle polygons deftly enough for that kind of game to flow well, whereas with the PS2 that potential was there. At the least the Wii has Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and people seem pretty happy with it.
