Sorry for getting more and more off-topic but I find this interesting.  $3k is a nice profit from something done as a hobby, but what's the feasibility of making a career out of it?  How much development time was involved?  Do you think you could have sold more if you had spent more time on it or put some actual money on advertising?  (Nothing fancy, but say a banner ad on a site like this)

You don't have to answer if you don't want to, of course.

Well, keep in mind that the $3k+/person keeps going up (it's actually at $3200+ at the moment). Since our sales are mostly based on our high user rating (which keeps it near the top of the Top Rated XBLIG of All Time list), I imagine sales will be slow but consistent as opposed to other games with more frontheavy sales. 22 days out and we're still selling at least 200 copies every day.

I'm not sure how much a modest advertising budget would have helped, but we might try something with our next game. Oh and Breath of Death VII took the 2 of us about 3 months to make.

And yes, we are trying to turn this into a full time business. Our next game will have a number of improvements which should make it feel more like a 16-bit title than an 8-bit one so we'll see how it performs.

That's awesome.  To me, that sounds like great success.  Does everyone get 9000 sales a month on XBLIG?  Your modesty is making it sound like it's nothing special.  Good job... go buy some stuff!

No, XBLIG sales tend to vary drastically from game to game. At one extreme you have games that never break 100 sales for the entire lifetimes and at the other end, you have James Silva's Z0MB1ES game that sold 200k in 8 months.

10k+ in the first month is drastically better than most games on the service.

Yeah, I saw that article. It gave us a nice boost in visibility which translated into more sales - we got around 500 sales Monday and 400 sales yesterday, whereas the week before, we were averaging around 150-200 sales a day.

I just picked this up after having some left over MS points.  It was fantasitc.  Took me about 8 hours over 2 days playing pretty constantly when I was not at work.

Congrats on how well its selling.  Any updates on when your next game hits?

The new game (Cthulhu Saves the World) should be out in September. We put some new screenshots up on our website this week - http://zeboyd.com - so check them out.

And as far as sales on Breath of Death VII go, we're up to 26,000.
