In DQ games armor is usually better to buy, and even then helmets for the price give pretty good def. increases. If you don't have enough gold to buy the best weapon, you'll typically find one in the dungeon or can just wait until the next town.

It's worth keeping in mind just how big the increase is too. You can probably safely ignore it if it's only +5 unless you're still at an early point, but something like +30 over what you have now is probably worth investing in right then and there.
