Considering that it looks to be an ad aimed at the Japanese market which means that he must have hugeeeee junk by their standards (or so says South Park on whom I totally and completely rely upon for my perception of other cultures).

Okay, so a thread about handhelds turned into a dick thread.  Man, I love RPGFan!  Oh wait, it was my filthy mind talking about PSPorn that started this downward spiral.  Ummm... THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!

Maybe I'll just go back to my corner, read Xenodurr, and play Rainblood. 

I will say that those common complaints about handhelds (tiny screens, crampy fingers) were ones I expressed during the GBC and GBA era.  Another one was that GBC and GBA weren't backlit.

I completely agree with the OP. I have a DS but never play it. I don't have a PSP, but want to get one because of all the amazing games coming out for it. But I KNOW I won't use it, so I don't bother. But if I can hook it up to my tv somehow, we may be in business. How is this done? Through the PS3? I'm totally getting one if I can play the games like normal console ones. Makes me wonder why I need the PSP itself. Too bad I can't just get the games and play the through the PS3 somehow.

It's done through component/composite cables you can buy for the 2000 and 3000 versions of the system, which you plug into at the headphone jack. I believe you need an HDTV to play them, but I swear I've seen people mention running games on SDTVs over composite at some point.

I have the TV-out cable for my PSP but I've never been completely happy with it.  For one thing the image doesn't actually fill the screen on my TV (even if I put it on 'zoom', though that at least improves things), and the cable is not as long as I would like.  It's also annoying to turn on because you have to exit the game, select external display in the menu, and then start the game again.  Put it to sleep at any point and it defaults to going back to the PSP's display.

Also, I literally cannot play the PSP without being in pain if I don't use a grip accessory.  I know ergonomic issues are nothing new on handhelds, but I have found the PSP particularly bad in this regard, primarily when trying to use that horrible analog nub.  The grips let me hold the PSP in a lower position so that I can reach up to the analog nub instead of having to contort my thumb in some bizarre fashion.  Actually, with grips it's a pretty comfortable system, but it adds a lot of bulk and makes switching UMDs a pain.

Speaking of ergonomics, the DSi XL was mentioned.  Does that actually offer any improvement in this regard?  It's certainly...bigger, and more plastic to grip is a good thing, but it doesn't look like they've changed the shape at all.  In addition the buttons are just as cramped together as they are on a regular DSi (leading to an almost comical appearance with all the unused space).  I'll admit I haven't actually tried one, but I can't imagine it being much better than a regular DSi.  I think Nintendo really missed an opportunity to improve the shape there...

There's one reason to love handhelds and that is that Castlevania games are still good because of them.

I actually go through phases with my handhelds, for my ds I barely played it last year at all and so far this year I've played it more then any of my consoles, I've also taken a break from WoW and am watching more tv shows so that might have something to do with it because depending on the game and show it's not too hard to pay attention to both.

I realize that I'm hardly the norm, but I almost exclusively game on the go.  DS, PSP, iPod Touch... I play them all.  Although not usually at the same time.  I'll go in stretches where I just have just one, then another.  I've been focusing on iPhone OS games for the site lately, so I haven't been carting my DS or PSP anywhere, but I've got a PSP game coming up, so it'll be going back in the backpack. 

This reminds me, though - I need to get the cable to play it on the TV now that I have a TV that can use it!

I doubt this will add much to the topic but I enjoy handhelds and console rpgs equally. Although I hold both at different standards. Obviously length and graphics have to be taken into account when comparing the two.

My DS gets just as much love as my PS2. I don't have a PSP right now. I used to yeaaars ago, but there was nothing interesting on at the time and I gave it to some kid. My PS3 pretty much gathers dust, but I don't think it will be like that forever.

I was all about handheld gaming last year. Lately I've been giving more attention to my consoles. Particularly my Wii and PS3.

My 360 admittedly has been used more for Netflix than anything else. =/

That's like me and my PS3 - I almost only use it for watching movies.  But I've had some great fun when I did actually use it for gaming too.  (Uncharted 2, InFamous, Disgaea 3, etc.)

and in sparta, people are generally male
in a way, dicks can be thought of as handheld games
almost like those handheld games that were their own system (such as game and watch)
and they're free for anyone that has them
only complaint I have about handheld devices are that they get dirty too easily, especially psp
