Well, as the article says, the game WAS originally planned to be episodic.  I'm guessing that they just wanted to wait to release this until they saw that the sales would be worth the effort.

Maybe not - they might drop the price on the first one soon/when the sequel comes out, in order to draw people in.  "Buy the cheap one, and you'll want to buy the more expensive one."  (Expensive being relative - it's $15, and they COULD have released it as a retail game for $60.)
