I do not really mind if some of the jokes are off. There are some where either bad translation ruins it or it is just a joke we "won't get" over here. What I hate is when they create something that is really funny but keep using it again and again...and again until it gets really stale.

Or they create something that they think is funny and use it constantly, even when it's not funny, which is usually what happens.

It is not only JRPGs that do this though. A lot of WRPG humour I just find unfunny. It may be because a lot of the time it just does not suit the atmosphere. There are exceptions to both JRPgs and WRPGs though.

Most RPGs would be greatly improved without writing.

Or games in general, really.

I generally don't laugh at RPGs. Sometimes I go "Aww" but mostly I just look dead-eyed when I play video games.

I think I may have laughed once in a Persona game. I'm not sure, probably not.

WAIT! this may not count because it probably wasn't intended to be funny. In Final Fantasy X, after Yuna gets Valefore everyone gathers round a fire at night.

If you go near this old couple sitting with Yuna and old woman says "Stay away from the summoner" in a really weird voice, it always cracked me up. I was 10 when I played it though.

I thought Persona 4 had a number of genuinely funny moments.

Fucking zombies is serious business bro.

Also the most recent thing that made me laugh in a videogame is in Deus Ex when you give money to those australian chicks at the lucky money club and JC Denton is all like

"Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure."

In this goofy-ass voice. God that was brill-o.

And I'm not really one to talk because I'm watching Arthur on PBSKids right now but shut the fuck up this is my dream.

That show is fucking awesome.

OT: Obsidian making a Chrono game? Do not know if I want. They're pretty hit and miss.

What I DO want: A Chrono game made by Warren Spector. He would definitely get it right.

I'm not so sure about that. However, I am certain that it would be 'EPIC'.

Epic Trigger. Coming to a PC/PS360 near you.

A CT game made by CliffyB would probably be Epic as well ;)

(Seriously, why can't they make something else as good as the original Unreal again?)

I think a western styled remake of an old JRPG is an interesting idea, actually. I'm betting if this wasn't Chrono Trigger but rather some more obscure one like Treasure Hunter G you guys wouldn't be nearly as hesitant about it.

Vic Ireland - but it wasn't funny in the first place.

Hey, I've noticed that too. wRPGs all seem to be quite serious and heavy on the realism, sometimes to a laughable degree. I think I would have enjoyed Dragon Age a lot more if it was more stylized and less realistic. It felt too realistic for it's own good. Hell, it was cliche kitch fantasy. Someone really needs to make a lighthearted "romp" but with wRPG sensibilities.

People say that jRPGs are stuck in a rutt, and they are. But wRPGs are all serious, bleak, and realistic. It gets a little old after a while. At least jRPGs aren't afraid to do random fun things for comic relief.

while that may be true i think many jrpg fans (myself included) are also stuck in a rut. my gaming interest are clearly grounded in 1999-2000.
