FFVIII had a story?
By my understanding, it had a quarter of a story (I like to call it the first disc).

I don't remember character names at all, even while playing a game I'll forget the names. Stories I have some idea of what happens, but for the most part RPGs have pretty basic stories so it's hard for them to be memorable.

The main RPG I can talk about for hours is FFT.

I remember stuff I DO in a game more than stuff I casually observe. Most RPGs don't give you many opportunities to really do stuff outside of what's defined by the linear plotline.

That is true but I see many people talking about different games in such detail, it makes me scratch my head. Another thing that bothers me is every RPG has a ton of exploits to where people breeze through them and I never end up doin those. Crisis Core for example or even FFT, there are easier ways to win battles by doing this and that and I never would have thought to do those things lol.

If I play a game enough, and enjoy it enough, I can remember an absurd amount of details.
Final Fantasy VII and X are probably the most notable ones because those are the only two JRPGs I had access to for a LONG time when I was a kid. So I would play them over and over. I could tell you a lot of stuff about some SMT games. Other than that though, I don't remember a lot.
I mean, I also enjoy Atelier games and Fire Emblem games. But I probably couldn't tell you everything about them like I could FF VII, X or Nocturne, Persona or Digital Devil Saga.

Obviously, if I've played a game a few times, I'll remember more. FFVII, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears (yes, I once had way too much time on my hands) I remember well.
BUT for stuff I've only played once through, it all depends. There are games I can recall quite well despite having only played once, like most SMT games. Digital Devil Saga and Nocturne especially. Usually this is when I really enjoy a game and/or take my time playing through it. But if I rush through it (Xenosaga II), or if it's been a really long time (hello, Chrono Cross), I'm a bit rusty.

I only beat Tactics Ogre once and remember nothing about it :(
I think I was in a rush to get through it.

I tend to get the story while having a recollection of the gameplay that is impossible to forget. I guess in short, I remember the game but not the story.

I really don't see how anyone could forget a JRPG's plot given how they're all almost identical to each other.

Lol, to some extent they are. I really thought Lost Odyssey had an amazing story all the way through. I want to play it again soon :)
