My choice is rather obscure, and requires explanation, so I'll explain. Back in the early 90's, a company called SNK put out a fighting game (yeah, just hold on,) entitled Samurai Shodown, which turned into a series, and the lead of this series was a manly badass swordsman entitled Hoahmaru, and as luck may have it, there was also a Samurai Shodown RPG put out, though it was never released over here, so most of you have probably never heard of it. There were 6 possible protagonists you could choose from, each being from the fighting games, and naturally, one of the 6 was the manly Haohmaru. He looks manly, he acts manly, he was in an RPG, and he's great, so that's my choice in a nutshell.

The only thing that may be harder than naming the manliest, is naming the girliest. Too many to choose from.

Chuck Norris.

I have quite a few in mind.

Rei, from Breath of Fire III.
Largo, from Valkyria Chronicles.
Auron, from Final Fantasy X.
Barret, from Final Fantasy VII.
Cid, from Final Fantasy VII.
Arngrim, from Valkyrie Profile.
Akihiko, from Persona 3.
Ashley Riot, from Vagrant Story.

Demi-Fiend? come on
I dunno, despite his looks...
Code:
punching Lucifer in the stomach, and doing thousands of damage is actually pretty manly. :P

Anywho, I think Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts), Vashyron (Resonance of Fate), and Meis Triumph (Thousand Arms) qualify as manly. ;}

I'm pretty sure Ashley is vagrant story's main character or am I going crazy?

What about Cid or Barret from FFVII?

... Wait did FFVII have a Pink Floyd reference that I've missed this ENTIRE TIME.

The topic didn't say anything about the choices having to be main characters. It just asked for the manliest JRPG hero. I think this would include mostly anyone on the "good guys" side as they are all heroes of the game.

Ha! I never noticed that before.

I don't know if you are that into Japanese gaming culture (I'm an expert) but when they say Hero it generally refers to the main character.

I thought the same as Thoren, I thought Hero meant the MAIN hero. I could have named all those guys if I thought we were including secondary characters and sidekicks.

What about the guy from Nocturne? huh? He Actually turns into a demon himself and goes to battle alone in a wasteland full of demons.
Now that I wrote that, I thought the protagonist from Demon's Souls run into almost the same category, but the guy from Nocturne was not a fighter to begin with, as opposed to the MC of Demon's Souls, and he's customizable so I think it doesn't counts.

Demi-Fiend is the guy from Nocturne.

Oops, living and learning.

One I just remembered, how about the guy from Nier ? The father. Sure I don't look his design, but he's far from being a sissy, if anything he does look like a man.

Manliness has nothing to do with looks, it's all about the BURNING SOUL inside.

Demi-Fiend and Tir McDoh from Suikodenl take the cake.
