Have you ever played a Visual Novel? And why not?
«

A brief introduction... In my spare time, I work as a fan translator for visual novels.
http://vndb.org/d6
Currently the project I am working on is called Katahane.
(Incidentally, a visual novel was awarded the 18th best 'RPG' of the decade on RPGfan.com. Ever17
http://www.rpgfan.com/features/Top_20_RPGs_of_the_Last_Decade/20-18.html
... )
And so as a fan translator, I am overly curious. Have you heard of visual novels before? Have you played one? And most importantly, why not if you have not? A genuine question.
My blog.

Any comments appreciated.

Ok, maybe I'm just being excessively paranoid but the URLs are getting cut. There have been C&Ds sent to visual novel fantranslators before, so I'm going to play it safe here.
The topic in and of itself should be fine though, so I'll leave this open.

Cosign, be very careful the info you go spreading around. Fan translations are illegal without permission from the author.
In answer to your question, yes. I've played somewhere between 30 and 40 of them. It was Neal (Dincrest) and I who voted for Ever 17 in our RPG of the decade awards.

I'm not sure what constitutes a "visual novel," as opposed to a point & click adventure game, or maybe a classic text-based adventure game. Anyone care to relieve me of my ignorance?

You hit enter to "turn the page" and occasionally make dialog choices that may or may not decide how the story plays out. That's what my understand is anyway.

So I decided to watch a few scenes from Ever17, and I can pretty comfortably say I'll never play it. It just doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. It's just not for me, I guess.

Thanks - in that case, I just played one recently on my phone! (I have an Android OS phone.) It's called Choice of the Dragon, and it was fun. :)

This is a very old topic, but I said everything I need to in it. The DS is a great platform for visual novels. Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice anyone?

The only visual novels I play are the ones with the naked chicks in it.
Well that and the occasional Phoenix Wright game.

Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright, AGAIN, and Jake Hunter certainly count. Granted, Jake Hunter and AGAIN weren't very good.

Hotel Dusk is actually
advertised
as at least an interactive novel, look on the case or around online.

999 is an adventure game being brought out soon by Aksys games. I hear it is excellent. One to look out for.

I enjoy ones that give me some range of movement and ask you to solve puzzles (Like the aforementioned Hotel Dusk).
Don't enjoy the ones that are just lots of text where you make a dialog choice every few minutes. Admittedly I might care more if the story was good, but I generally dislike any sort of love/romance stories, which is what most of these kinds of games are.
Speaking of Hotel Dusk, Last Window's getting EU release in like 2 days. I'm fucking excited. It's time to get ready to import.
