The next game by the Demon’s Souls team is going multiplatform in the West. From Software will publish Project Dark on their own as a PlayStation 3 title in Japan.
Namco Bandai has the publishing rights for North America and Europe where Project Dark will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Project Dark (temporary title), much like Demon's Souls, is described as a tense dungeon crawler with a dark fantasy atmosphere. While no specifics were given, Project Dark will have a new network system that allows players to interact with others and share content.
Namco Bandai says a more detailed announcement about Project Dark is coming in early 2011.
And we are still waiting for the trailer. The music was amazing and it felt really like a Dark Fantasy game; depressing and gloomy. So far this is the only thing we got from the conference...

Well, you asked for it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nk5O-kdiyU
This is from Sony's live keynote. This was one of the trailers that were blocked from public viewing.
Not even a single screen shot of the damned thing. I remember watching this live and then hearing the words Demon's Souls, Action RPG and Dark Fantasy... I almost had a heart attack.
Eurogamer says:

Project Dark looks like Demon's Souls 2 in all but name. The same team and director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, are in charge.
Here's a press release from Bandai Namco's website translated by duckroll from NeoGAF:
Quote
From Software and Bandai Namco Games are working together to develop "Project Dark (Working Title)" on the Playstation3 and Xbox360, planned for release in the year 2011.
In Japan the game will be published by From Software on the PS3, Bandai Namco Games will be publishing the game on the PS3 and Xbox360 outside of Japan.
"Project Dark (Working Title)" is a brand new dark fantasy RPG designed to completely embrace the concepts of tension in dungeon exploration, fear in encountering enemies, the joy of new discoveries, and a high sense of achievement in progressing. The game is set in a dark fantasy world filled with decadent atmosphere, with a heavy emphasis on player freedom in discovering various tactics and strategies to use in weapon based combat.
The game will also feature a brand new network system, allowing players to share play content with others. players will be able to share their common experiences from adventuring with other players without requiring direct communication.
Both companies are working together to share their individual strengths in pushing this title forward - From Software's development expertise and Bandai Namco Games' extensive overseas expansion.
Please look forward to a new dark fantasy RPG experience which pushes the sense of accomplishment in gameplay to the limit.
More details are planned to be released early in 2011.

The group around the fire says to me vastly improved co-op, on a higher scale.

My guess is that it has a more standard co-op mode, given the fact it's also on 360.

I think I've just realised that Demon's Souls is my favourite game of all time (after being my GOTY in 2009)...
When I saw this, I shit the bed instantly. I got the Platinum Trophy in Demon's Souls around the time my in-game clock hit 211 hours and most of that was done alongside a friend. We spent literally all night some nights playing some co-op... helping out other players as Blue Phantoms and invading other players' worlds as Red Phantoms.
50 of those hours came from farming a particular ore in the game (Bladestone) to create a weapon for a Trophy... only 1 enemy in the game had a <5% drop rate. Not 1 type of enemy... 1 enemy. Still fun though... strangely.
I can't wait to see where this game goes.
*Puts aside 200 hours of lifetime for this...*

I'm so glad this game became so successful. To think that it could have just faded into obscurity...
