2. The MegaTen series is sort of like Street Fighter in it's structure, in that instead of one long series like Final Fanatasy, it's broken into several subseries, such as Persona, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, etc., and of course there's the original series, which Nocturne is the third installment of. (With Strange Journey being the fourth installment in all but name from what I understand.)

To sum it up, no, you don't need to play Nocturne first, and you don't need to play the first two SMT's before you play Nocturne either. (I have done so with patches, but you don't need to.)

There are character cameos and subtle references to other installments, the Persona series especially seems to love this. But otherwise you don't need to play them in any particular order. Though you may not know who the characters are because of this but the game usually does an adequate job of explaining who they are although it does take the nostalgia factor away.

1. Yes, albit in the long run. If you want to know it will determine some skills you get and influence
Code:
who you get in the last dungeon of DDS2.

Also, if you want to know what to do to get all the "right" answers for 1 then
Code:
pick the top option every time.

2. No, but I found DDS helped me better get the battle system to do better in Nocturne, I think by familiarizing myself with spells/abilities without having to throw them out or hope I have the right demon that knows them.

Edit: I forgot Code never got changed to spoiler! Sigh.

Since 1's been covered well enough, I'm going to jut echo what Eusis said for 2. I played DDS 1 and 2 before Nocturne, and because they use the same battle engine, it kinda prepped me for Nocturne which is a bit harder IMO. The DDS games are also shorter (even together) than Nocturne. But story wise no, they're not connected.
