A little thread just to name those old great tunes from great games that you have (or not) played.
Space Harrier Main Theme
, every version of this track is great.
Let's Go Away from Daytona USA
, a guilty pleasure of mine and it's perfect for funerals and birthdays. The
piano version
is nice too.
Speed King from OutRunners
, this track is so
catchy.

Even though I never really played it the main them to Phantasy Star: generations of doom.
The Dark World theme from A Link to the Past.
I'll sing the praises of Star Control II until I die, esp the 3DO and the recently release Ur Quan Master build. Some guys also remixed a lot of the tracks too.

The theme's for the Chmmr and Hyperspace are awesome.

And the Secret of Mana theme always gives me chills.
and lol this thread reminded me of this. I always thought this george harrison track would make great RPG town music. Like when you go back to a certain town and it's all destroyed or empty and haunted.

If it counts as retro, I think my overall favorite piece of VGM is "Moon Beach" from the first Streets of Rage game. That's stage 3.
For RPGs, "Rise or Fall" from Phantasy Star 2. That's the battle theme. Despite hearing it every 3 seconds for 92+ hours, I never got tired of it.

I like to think of Sega Genesis music as the "speed metal" of the vg music scene

The Main Theme from Phantasy Star III
, is one of the best tracks from that game and the
Sega Rock version
is even better.
Here's another version of the same track by the
S.S.T. Band
live.

SaGa 2 on the GameBoy has an amazing soundtrack. I still can't believe how disappointing the soundtrack of the remake is. SaGa 3 for the DS seems to have better music, we'll see.

Every single track from the first sonic game. The 16 bit era is filled with great stuff though.

This is such a wide open topic. How do we define "retro"? Anything from the Gen/SNES era or before? earlier than that?
Personally, I think NES/GB/old computer games, etc. = retro. Old school chip tunes.
Regardless, I agree on the greatness of The Genesis stuff posted. Moon Beach is also one of my favs. The PS games had great music. Thunderforce III & IVs(the ones I played) synthesized rock was amazing.
As for my contributions:
Shadowgate for the NES:

I agree with Chronix about Chip and Dale. That game had some great tunes!
