Hate me. Cuz today, you wish you were me, or at least a resident of this barren wasteland, like me. For any Alaskan resident, like me, it's better than Christmas, better than Thanksgiving, better than all holidays rolled into one. Today is PFD day, the day in which every Alaskan gets almost $1300 in cash from oil money. It wont be safe to drive for the next few nights because half the state will blow that money on booze. There'll be shiny new snow mobile's ("Snow Go's") on the roads, new hunting rifles, a few will later be confiscated during criminal investigations. But today's not the day to worry about such things, because on at least on this day, we can all sing out in perfect harmony, "I'm RICH, Biatch!"

I'm curious, why do you choose to live in Alaska?  I'm guessing that you're using "barren wastelands" jokingly (even though I'm sure it's true to an extent) but I just wonder what keeps you in a place where, as far as I know, the cost of living is insanely high.  I really do want to visit Alaska at some point, but it's always been a curiosity of mine as to what keeps people living out in a place that is so damn expensive and cut off from the world.

But yeah, that PFD thing would be totally sweet right now because I'm in some serious debt and I don't know what I'ma do right now dammit...

I really don't. I grew up here, went to college in Ohio, but I'm not made of money, so I came back to get a job and live off my parents for a few years. I'm in my own place now... but it's a 20ft x 12ft cabin with no running water. I'm just currently saving up and waiting for my girlfriend to finish her undergrad before moving out. The "barren wasteland" comment was not joking, I really do hate it here.

I remember when Alberta did something similar before Ralph Klein ended his tenure as premier (and so everyone nicknamed it Ralphbucks...). Everyone got $400, even kids and stuff. Not quite $1300 but it was definitely enough to make a difference especially when you're a family of 5.

Not sure if it was directly because of oil, but there's plenty of oil in Alberta regardless. It's one reason they don't have a provincial tax, the buggers. :P

Alaskan cruises are rather awesome from what I hear. I wouldn't live up there, though.

Can't go wrong with a country where it's wet over 200 days a year (a tour guide told me).

Sorry to hear, the money probably doesn't make up for it much - but it's sweet you're waiting for your girl to finish up; I"d turn into humble pie if anyone did that for me - - so go you! haha

And a cabin is SOO Canadian sounding haha (yeah yeah, I know it's US soil, but c'mon, Alaska is the country's distant cousin more than anything)

I'd say that I would KILL for that extra spot of cash... then I realize it doesn't even pay for a QUARTER of my university bill.... =(

Damn.  That sounds like it would be awesome...for about a year.  Then I'd probably get sick of it.  But I was born and raised in NYC so I got too much city in me.  It's just one of those things that I wonder about Alaska.  It seems like it has so much against it as far as people living there...yet they do.  What would your ideal place be then?
