So I had a bit of an adventure today. I was driving my scooter (Yes, I drive a scooter. A 2003 Genuine Stella, which you've probably never heard of but it's basically a modernized Vespa P series), going about 35mph when my rear wheel came off. Yes, my rear wheel came off. Not the tire, the wheel. That's obviously not something that's supposed to happen. Anyway, I didn't even have time to realize what happened (my first thought was that the engine seized, but of course holding down the clutch didn't help...) but somehow I managed to skid to a stop like a champ. I stayed in control, didn't tip, didn't hit anything, didn't injure myself in the slightest. Hell, somehow or another I even managed to pull over to the side of the road while doing this. It wasn't even until somebody who saw this whole thing happen said to me, "Dude you're wheel came off," that I realized exactly what happened.
I still need to assess exactly how much damage there was. In theory it might be as simple as replacing the wheel and somehow getting the sheered ends of the bolts out of the way so I can put new bolts in. But I'm not sure if the skid itself broke anything else and I do need to figure out exactly why the bolts holding the wheel on failed in the first place.
Still, it could have been a whole lot worse.
