I swear to god, buying a mobile phone in US is such inane bullshit involving contracts that rip you off to hell and back. Never getting used to this after the simplicity of my home country (and having 100% coverage throughout every single nook & cranny of a country).

Can I just buy a smartphone with wifi capabilities without doing any pointless data plan and just get a SIM card??!?! Help me, please.

Yes you can.  No phone company will tell you how, though.  You'll probably have to buy the phone online since very few stores will stock unlocked models.  Then get a simple prepaid plan or something.  That's what I do.  The phone will cost more upfront since there's no subsidy but you'll save a ton of money in the long run.

Contracts are a complete scam, but it's a scam that's become so entrenched here people think it's normal...

Agreed with Kev, the whole cell phone contract thing in the US is a giant fucking ripoff.  $20 for a text message "package" that costs the company like .001cents per text? Fuck that.  Yeah I understand infrastructure and sunk cost bullshit, but I still don't buy it.  Most text messages ride the same comm channel that are being sent regardless if you're sending a text or not. 

Go to Wal-mart and ask look for their Straight Talk plans.  Not sure whether any other stores carry straight talk.  You need your own phone and you can't roam, but you can use AT&T's/Verizon's towers wherever you are.  It beats the hell outta any other plan.

Cell phone, cable, and internet rates are shitty in this country. I'll never have cable, waste of money in my opinion. I'd only like it because most local teams are on cable.

I get a %20 discount on my cell plan from work, so that makes it a bit more manageable.

Yeah, my wife just finally got an iPhone and she's now stuck in a 2-year contract. You have to negotiate the damn thing like you're buying a car.
I have an iphone that I got through work. I don't pay a cent for it, except for any apps I may purchase. If I didn't get it through work there's no way I  would waste over a $100/month on a smart phone. A Tracphone would suit me just fine.

I can't go into extreme detail, but on Friday I evacuated my class from my classroom because one of my students went into such a violent tantrum I feared for the kids safety. Ah, the joys of special ed!

Long story short: Kid is totally in the wrong class for his disability. He's severly autistic. Parents can't accept it...and so the blame falls on us. Maybe.

It could've been worse, Lucca. For instance, during the middle of his tantrum a bunch of tigers could've rushed into the halls and devoured all of your students. That would've REALLY sucked.

Oh, anyway, I bought some creepy damn plush thing at an art show today. It looks like something from The Neverhood. I love it. It freaks me out.

Wow, some fucker on the first floor is like smoking cigars. And since the walls/pipes aren't really sealed off in my building, MY apartment smells like smoke. Badly. This is fucking atrocious.

Contracts are worth it if you have a family plan of some sort. Straight talk is going to cost you $45/month for an iPhone, plus $15 for the SIM card. They claim unlimited data, but you will get warnings if you go beyond 2G/month and will possibly drop you if you do so repeatedly.
