If you're thinking of doing harsh vocals, here are some good places to start:
http://melissacross.com/
(she's a vocal coach for harsh vocalists)
http://www.angelagossow.com/
(the two options under "Scream" offer a good amount of insight)

Johnny Cash taught me how sing, not personally mind you, but his were the first songs I sang that didn't sound like crap. Also the first songs that I could sing and play at the same time.
You play guitar right? Try workin' on some simple songs, guitar and vocals. It's better for learning than singing along to a CD because you can hear yourself better, and better than singing without music because you can keep yourself in tune.
One of the most important things though, you really gotta belt it out like ya mean it =D The more confidence you have, the better you'll sing. That was a major stumbling block for me.

That can be tough, but if you already play guitar, you should have an idea if you're tone deaf or not.
Might sound silly to suggest, but you can learn something about how on-pitch you are by singing in Rock Band. Sadly, though, striving for high point totals won't teach you to sing well - it'll just teach you to auto-tune yourself. But yeah, as Archendrus said, confidence is king. You will actually sing better if you're singing strongly.
On the physical front, standing while you sing can really help you have better breath control. And yeah, if you're gonna be screaming it out, look into a coach who specifically focuses on that. My understanding is that if you're doing it "right," you can shriek at a concert all night and still have a voice in the morning.
