Bad Marketing

My gran has been buying Lyle's Golden Syrup for god knows how many years. Since before I was born, anyway. Though, technically that stuff lasts forever so I could have just been seeing the same tin over 19 years. Anyway, the point is I've seen that tin so many times, but never once have I noticed that the logo on the front of the tin is infact the rotting corpse of a lion, surrounded by hoards of bees nibbling at his innards.






Golden Syrup is like a sweeter form of treacle. The wiki page says you guys don't get it outside of Louisiana, so I thought i'd be all helpful and stuff.


Has anyone else seen any examples of bad marketing lately? I actually like the dead lion on the front, but I imagine most people wouldn't.

I'm pretty sure that logo is a Biblical reference, so I imagine there are fewer people pissed off by it than you would think.

That said, I had never even heard of Lyle's Golden Syrup before.  I googled it and read the wikipedia entry and yeah, it's a Bible reference, though it's not really clear why that was chosen for the logo.

Yeah, it's a reference to Samson ripping apart a lion, bees nested inside the carcass and made honey. Though this isn't honey and it's still a gruesome image to put on your product. :P

I twittered it earlier, and the amount of people who told me how disgusting it was made me want to post it here. As I said, I like it. But i seem to be alone in that.

Yeah, I remember seeing faggots being advertised in Iceland when I was about 13. I had never heard of them before.
