I can't remember how difficult FFVIII and IX were because I never bothered to get far, but VII was perfectly fine as maybe my 4th RPG ever.
I would not recommend Final Fantasy VIII honestly. The way monsters level with you would make it a very off putting experience especially for beginners.

I'm surprise no-one's mentioned Chrono Trigger; that's about as casual as you can get. (Though it's still a decent game. =) )
Final Fantasy Chronicles is a pretty good compilation I suppose. Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger are worth getting.

Yeah, but he'd have to find FF Chronicles if he wanted to play it on his PS2. I though about it but was under the impression that it's rare.
And hell I wouldn't recommend VIII because of that fucking Junction system. :P

And neither's
Anthology
apparently.
I'd get both of those collections.

I got those a long time ago. They are definitely worth checking out. Legend of Mana is another good action RPG as well.

I got them when they came out... no idea where they are now, probably storage. I also have the GBA/DS iterations, it's retarded how many games I've bought and rebought and rebought.

I suppose the Lunar series are another set of games he should try as well. How many times have those games been re-release again? First on the Sega CD, then the Saturn (Japan only), then the Playstation, then the GBA (Just Silver Star Story I think) and PSP (Silver Star Story). I only have the Playstation versions though. I thought about getting the Sega CD versions too but I can't be bothered.

Hmm, Dark Cloud 2? Any good? I haven't heard anything about it.
I'm a huge fan of Dark Cloud two. I had a lot of fun with taking photos for ideas and then using them to invent/create new items/weapons/ect. Also a fan of the fishing mini game too after a level. I only recommend it if you're a fan of dungeon crawlers, and maybe golf.
Yes.
GOLF.
And hey, not to toot my own horn, but I have a
thread
to games I'm selling in case you might want to tread into the PS2 rpg side... and if you are greatly interested in Dark Cloud 2, I wouldn't mind parting with my copy...

Wow, I didn't know that this thread garner a lot of replies, which I'm very grateful for.
Spoke to my buddy and he has a copy of FFVII so I'll borrow it from him.
Isn't Grandia out of print now? I check the Amazon and it fetch rather mighty dollar.
I'll be picking up a copy of FF Chronicles and Anthology since the price on Amazon seems to be great.
I check out Legend of Mana and it seems to be out of print as well.
Lunar series seems to be interesting. Which ones has been released for PS1/2?
Do I need to play Dark Cloud 1 before playing Dark Cloud 2?

Yeah it's pretty expensive but
this
is the cheapest one I could find.

Both
of
them
. I'm going to tell you right now Lunar games might set you back a bit. Those are the cheapest ones I could find with respect to conditioning. But you might be able to find better deals.

From what I understand they aren't directly related.

Thanks so much for your help, xXMelancholiaXx.
Lunar set seems to be bit pricey but I hope I can pick them up in near future.

Yeah they tend to run pretty high but they have a lot of nice extras too.
EDIT: On a side note I think I might have accidental double posted without realizing it. I wonder how that happened. :S
