My problem is that, judging from the reviews, Dark Dawn still has all of the problems that the first game did: low difficulty, slow beginning, too much text, too many random battles, etc. I'm sure there'll be plenty that won't mind that, but those problems were the main reasons Golden Sun failed hard for me. I'll still give it a chance someday, but it doesn't sound like an insta-buy just yet.

I'd love to be all over this but I have no extra cash for a while and I also have a backlog of a buncha games.
Maybe after my FF-a-thon?

Got it yesterday, been playing it for about 20 hours now, and I am pleased greatly. Granted, I went in biased because the original 2 were great imho, so unless this took a whole new route and did everything wrong, I probably would have liked it anyway. Music is the same (loved the golden sun intro theme, made me smile), graphics improved but feel the same as far as designs go, and the story is much the same as the originals (slow to start, lots of filler til you get back into the main quest, dire events ensue). It's enough nostalgia to keep me content, and enough new material to flesh out the old tired feeling. My only gripe thus far is I wanna see the rest of the old Colden Sun heroes. Isaac and Garet were cool and all (forget Garet's porn stache, check out Isaac's beard of manliness), but Felix and Jenna were favorites, and Mia was cool too, as was Ivan. Sheba and Piers...meh, but still.
Spoilers.....

The visual quality in this game looks amazing for the DS.
Tons of detail

It might be a while before I pick this up, but I will! I'm playing through the first two (very slowly) for the time being.

Early impressions:
-The beginning synopsis was too long for my eager heart
-Gorgeous graphics, even for the 3DS, do the FF7 sprite thing (between real-ish and SD)
-Garret's straight-line-mustache scares me
-Isaac's chin strap is unexpected to the typical good-looking anime trope. Welcomed?
-I can't seem to pick the right emotions for things, I seem to be inappropriate.

Once i finally finish Fallout New Vegas, this will be mine. Everyone suddenly is complaining about the original games (1up.com said some VERY harsh things), and saying "it has all the problems of the first games", but I LOVED the first games. I never thought they were too slow, or the encounters too many. I remember loving the beautiful graphics, appreciating that they kept the encounter rate down, and loving the dialog; three things that people suddenly seem to be tearing to shreds. If this new title has all those "failings" of the old games, then I'll be happy as a clam!

Yea, I was shocked by the review on 1UP when the reviewer called the graphics from the GBA Golden Sun games terrible. Killed the reviewer's credibility for me. There were only two things that bothered me about the GBA games, and others have already covered those grievances in this topic so I won't elaborate.
Someone on the comments for the 1UP review posted a link to this Penny Arcade comic from 2006 that seemed relevant:

Not everyone likes pre-rendered CG sprites like those in the old DKC games and the GBA Golden Sun titles.

I can't count the number of times people mailed me to say I had no credibility because they disagreed with my opinion on a video game.
Fun times!

I suppose I didn't quote Mr. Parish well enough. He didn't say the graphics were terrible, but I kind of wonder where he was coming from in saying:
Quote
Also unlike the GBA games, Dark Dawn looks fantastic.
Especially when most (if not all) reviews of the first GS at the time of its release lauded the game for its visuals:

To each their own I guess.
