On another site I contribute to, the "Soundtrack of the Month" pick was FF USA (Mystic Quest).

Another editor on there, who is also a chiptunes artist (zen_albatross), commented that the boss battle music from this game was one of the best battle themes ever.

Wow. He's kinda right. Doesn't this sound like it belongs in an Ys game? This is so friggin' awesome. Super Famicom pumped out ridiculously good tunes.

YES YES YES! I freakin' loved this at the time, and I still do. That game had a pretty darn good soundtrack. Thanks for the reminder.
Sad thing is, though...
The more I listen to the great music of old, the more I am saddened by the lack of it now. It shows up every now and then in games like Nier, and probably others I haven't played, but for the most part we are in a "great game(rpg? jrpg?) music" drought.

I've always felt that FF:MQ was the only FF game to really go all the way with the insane kind of devil-may-care grandiosity that the series has always brushed up against. It's like FFL2 in that it never gives a damn about how much or how little sense it's making and it's kind of awesome because of that.

I think that applies to the music as well. It's awesome in its own right. It's not tied to the typical tropes of fantasy RPG music. It's a lot closer to CT or Terranigma's soundtracks, really.

I've always been a huge fan of MQ's soundtrack... the final boss song is so epic. I had an album once called Preludio: Final Fantasy, and for the life of me I can't find it anywhere now. It had an awesome MQ remix on there.
