The term fanservice just means something the creators added for the viewer's / player's enjoyment.
So ecchi is a form of fanservice, but so are extra costumes and cameos.

Oh my GOD... hahaha!

What I see is the developers dancing around censorship issues masterfully.  It is hilarious to me... you thought that was a boob?  It's my hand, stupid!   HAHAH!!

I don't think desensitization to sex has anything to do with this.  Sex as a taboo makes for nervous laughter when it's approached, and this becomes hilarious.  This isn't trying to turn me on.  This is trying to make me laugh.

15 or so years ago they couldn't present real erotic fan-service because of the shitty graphics. Now graphics are better than ever and nothing is holding them back anymore. It's a direct relationship.

So far it didn't interfere that much so I won't complain.

Yeah, I don't find it to be a problem in most games, and they're even pretty funny when done right (IMO). Once it starts hampering the gameplay, then I'll complain.

Exactly.I just pick up a DS game when I want to avoid an RPG with fanservice. Not that I care one way or the other. Some games do it tastefully like Dragon Age.

Final Fantasy 4 had dancers who took their dresses off mid-dance when Cecil talked to them.

This is hardly a new thing, and it's hardly taking over the industry because you noticed in in three games, two of which are from companies where that's pretty much all they do.

Yeah, I was just thinking that myself. At least the sex scene I witnessed was ANYTHING BUT tasteful. Then again, I considered the game as a whole to be fairly tasteless, but I know I'm in the minority here.

Yeah, I'm going to have to third that.  The sex in DA was not tasteful in the least.  It was forced and unnecessary, really.

Baldur's Gate II had tasteful sex...because they didn't actually show it.

Oh for the days when a simple text description was enough.

This aint an RPG, and the game is probably gonna be awesome, but when the Persona team promotes a game with this...

You gotta admit that something somewhat changed.

Am I the only one who finds that poster really funny? I try not to let my immature side show through to much, but I really like that poster.

I was laughing at it too haha.

I can imagine a facial expression along the lines of ":O" upon seeing a scantily clad hotty, but Vincent there looks absolutely horrified.

":O" is already an exaggeration to taboo in my mind, so that is just hilarity on his face.

Obviously her sex is some kind of trap and there will be a valid threat, but "tee hee" is implied, and is funny.

From what I understand, the themes of Catherine seem to involve the nightmares of sexual deviance so it's a key part of the storyline.

Of course details are scarce right now and it's impossible to be sure but I have high hopes that Catherine will be an example of handling sex well in games.

And I like that poster...
