How accurate do you think this list is?
official link

Quote
1 GLaDOS - Portal
2 John Marston - RDR
3 Nathan Drake - Uncharted
4 Master Chief - Halo
5 Niko Bellic - GTA4
6 Alyx Vance - Half Life2
7 Kratos - GOW
8 Andrew Ryan - Bioshock
9 Loghain Mac Tir - Dragon Age
10 Ezio - Assassin's Creed
11 Ethan Mars - Heavy Rain
12 Commander Shepard - Mass Effect
13 Jimmy Hopkins - Bully
14 Captain John Price - Call of Duty
15 HK-47 - Starwars Knight of the Old Republic
16 Elena Fisher - Uncharted
17 The Illusive Man - Mass Effect2
18 Tommy Vercetti - GTA Vice City
19 The Boss - MGS3
20 Tim - Braid
21 Auron - FF10
22 Razputin - Psychonauts
23 Kaim Argonar - Lost Odyssey
24 Jade - Beyond Good & Evil
25 KOS-MOS - Xenosaga
26 Professor Layton - Professor Layton Series
27 Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney
28 Wander - Shadow of the Colossus
29 Bonnie MacFarlane - RDR
30 King of All Cosmos - Katamari

I find it sad that the first 15 or so are dominated by high-profile recent games.
a silent protagonist (#4) shouldn't be ranked that high.
I'm disappointed that in its explanation about Niko Bellic, he points out that GTA has mostly asshole main characters and Niko is an exception but everything else I've read about him (from reviews) points to him being the most unlikable character in that entire series.
I've read a lot of similar things about Jimmy Hopkins.
I've also read a few reviews claiming that Andrew Ryan is too underdeveloped.

some additional lists:
Quote
Style Over Substance (more about flash than depth)
Bayonetta - Bayonetta
Amaterasu - Okami
Travis Touchdown - No More Heroes
Isaac - Dead Space
Faith - Mirror's Edge

Good For A Laugh (comic relief)
Fawful - Mario & Luigi
Claptrap - Borderlands
Brucie - Grand Theft Auto IV
Isaac Washington - The House of the Dead: Overkill
Sheogorath - The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles

A Place To Remember (environments)
Rapture - Bioshock
Renaissance Italy - Assassin's Creed II
Liberty City - Grand Theft Auto IV
Capital Wasteland - Fallout 3
Arkham Asylum - Batman: Arkham Asylum

Characters Who Missed Their Marks (awful stereotypes, dreadful misfires, and cringe-worthy performances)
Dante - Devil May Cry
Michael Thorton - Alpha Protocol
The Rookie - Halo 3: ODST
Tingle - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Shadow the Hedgehog - Shadow the Hedgehog (although I think he appeared first in Sonic Adventure 2)

It's also sad that The Rookie got was on that final list, but Master Chief was #4 even though both are silent and could probably be just one character if Bungie wanted them to be.
Anyway, Catherine was mentioned in this issue and may very well be the first japanese game by a fairly small company like Atlus to be mentioned outside of Japan before its release.
yayyy atlus

Auron and Kaim (from Lost Odyssey) are largely forgettable.  No clue why they are on there.  Auron feels more like a, "Hey. We have no Final Fantasy characters on the list.  Who can we throw on there?"

Phoenix Wright should be way higher.  People love Phoenix and he seems to have left more of an impact than a lot of those characters.

Either that list is retarded or this generation is retarded.

Both are actually probably true.

Didn't America used to have a culture or something?

A list like this isn't really one I think too much off, the choices seem solid enough for the most part but the idea of making a list on this is somewhat silly in and of itself, but...

a silent protagonist (#4) shouldn't be ranked that high.

Seriously? Come the fuck on, he's become a gaming icon. He's not even silent, but I'll ignore that to bring up that if someone made a similar last for the 80s (or the whole history of games) it'd be absolute bullshit to not throw Mario or Link on because they're silent or effectively silent. We're not talking about best characterization here, just characters that manage to stand out and leave an impression one way or another.

Yeah, I'm surprised he wasn't #1... really surprised.

But I'm quite pissed that they had "Amaratsu" as style over substance, and then didn't put down "Middle-ages Nippon (Okami)" under environments, someone musta really hated Okami. I mean, as much as I love Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland, it doesn't hold a candle to Okami's environments. Even if you can't stand anything else in that game, you HAVE TO appreciate that.

Yeah, and the Rookie thing was just stupid. The others I can understand, but there was nothing wrong with the Rookie, he was meant as a completely non-character in which you were supposed to look through the eyes of to see everyone else. It's been done countless times. Buck was obviously the main character of that game.

I like glados at #1. Even though the glados love seems a bit over the top at times.

Yeah but unless you've been ignoring all of my posts from the lasts five years that should be pretty obvious.

I really like how almost all of their pics are from like 2006 onwards which if memory serves me had generally fewer games released than 2000-2005.

Also their criteria is weird.

Like, I get Halo from Halo being on there since Halo's a pretty well-known character. He has, if nothing else, brand recognition. I mean basically, you know who halo is even if you haven't played his games. It's like Mario, or Sonic, or Donkey Kong. You know your characters are culturally relevant when they start existing outside of their games. Glados also works pretty well in that sense although she's not really AS pervasive. This is more like someone picking 30 characters from a random assortment of XBox and PS2/PS3 games they liked a lot.

Also, WTF at Tim from Braid being on there. If you're going to pick an indie platformer, at least go with Quote from Cave Story. Cave Story was in a fucking episode of Sweet Life of Zack and Cody. That's some goddamn brand recognition for you. if you're putting Tim in there you might as well include those horrible deer monstrosities from Tales of Tales' thing.

The problem with this list (and most of these LETS DESCRIBE AN ENTIRE YEAR/DECADE/CENTURY IN ONE LIST) is that it's hard to remember what was culturally relevant at the start of the decade.  Sure there are some, but as has been pointed out, the feeling is that they were thrown on there as if only to satisfy the notion that they did go back far enough.  I mean, I like Auron and FFX, but can anyone REALLY say he had any sort of lasting effect that could really be determined as culture defining?  And this same argument could be twisted onto more recent characters, like the RDR character.  The game just freaking came out and we're supposed to believe that this game made such an impact that this guy can be said to define the freaking decade?  But...it's a freaking list so who the hell cares, right?

30...er...a bunch of characters that defined my decade(in no particular order):

Onimusha dude
Dynasty Warrior dudes
Halo dude
Metroid Prime chick(because in my eyes she's not the same Metroid chick from the SNES days)
Xenosaga chick
Star Ocean 3 dude
Rachet and Clank dudes  (How are these two for freaking DECADE defining, MRITE?)
Jak and Daxter dudes  (And these guys?)
Timesplitters dudes and chicks
Kingdom Hearts dude (another odd omission)
Final Fantasy X dude or chick

Meh, point made, lists suck and all that jazz.

EDIT: Holy shit I said "freak" a lot.  Not feelin' like mehself these days.

I personally feel like him being an icon should only get him in maybe top 10 or 20.
These people also gave Nier a 6.5 and FF13 a 9.25, so I guess it would naturally be screwed up.

In a weird way, you actually kind of proved a point. There's a good chance that the reason it's "bias" towards American games is because people DO know who they are. Well, most people! :)

On the other hand, I'd argue characters are usually better in Western games. Not to say there aren't terrible Western characters too.
