I gave up fighting things like DLC and digital releases for small games years ago.

But when it starts fucking with RPGs, that's when I start getting upset again.

To tell an audience that has, I think anyway, a good number of collectors and tell them "No more physical games for you!" just seems like pure idiocy.

I don't think this is necessarily an area they have a full say in though. The PSP market's all but gone with digital being one of the only practical ways to release, and PC's in some ways worse for anything that isn't a big blockbuster or at least notable enough, even Dark Souls went straight to DD in the US (though that could just be Namco Bandai sucking). HOWEVER, to a degree you're leaping to conclusions here: while it might not be too practical to release new PSP games by the time they can get done with Trails in the Sky 2, it's possible that they'd still put out a limited UMD release. The bigger reason getting a PSN option out there was simply so that it'd be safer to translate the game and get it out there, they don't have to worry about people needing to find the UMD as they ONLY way to play it, or keeping around a PSP with a working UMD drive in order to play it, they can get the (admittedly probably small) PSP GO base, along with the Vita base.

John is absolutely right.  Now, if they release on PC and only PC, then you'd have a problem.  With PSN it's just like switching out UMDs, except without the UMDs. 

I don't buy digital so it's a problem no matter which they release it on.

Distributors can just put up online instead of getting a retailer to put it up-- you'll never have to deal with "stock" again, and no need for making cases and all that.  I actually kinda welcome it.  And while I get it, I'm surprised so many people are so adamant to have a physical copy.

Yeah, sadly between how the PSP market is in non-Japan and the fact that the series is pretty niche, that's my attitude too.

On the plus side having a digital only release would cut down on costs and perhaps make the following Trails an easier sell to the decisionmakers.

Also, turns out there is a demo for Ao and Zero on the Japanese PSN.  I did not know this.  I downloaded Zero last night and will probably play through the demo this weekend.  If it's good, I may just buy it off PSN since Zero isn't going to be here for years anyway.

To be fair I really do wish they'd get the PC version over here in English. I was hoping they'd announce this shortly after the Ys games came out, but it's nearly the end of 2012 and still no word. Though it's probably also harder to hack a translation (and modern improvements like widescreen support) for a massive, text filled JRPGs versus a the comparatively dialogue light Ys games. Especially Origin that doesn't even have enough NPC dialogue to be a pain.
