PlayStation Portable is getting a version of Final Fantasy IV. But there's a bit more to the new version than just a port of the 1991 Super Famicom/SNES classic.

The latest issue of V Jump has a first look at Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection. This PSP title combines Final Fantasy IV with Final Fantasy IV The After Years. The latter is an episodic sequel to FFIV that was released on Wii Ware last year after originally appearing on cell phones.

For the PSP, Square Enix is redoing the visuals and adding a new scenario that connects FFIV and The After Years. There could be some other new elements as well, but we'll have to wait for a followup report.

Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection is due for PSP release in Spring 2011.

Ha, just posted this.

I'm surprised it didn't go iOS first. :P It'll be nice to play TAY, I'm too lazy for WiiWare.

Seems a little weird to have a 2D update for the PSP (presumably) while the DS gets the 3D remake, but it probably means the PSP version is far more likely to be the definitive version of the game.

I actually hope it's based off of the GBA version rather than the DS version.  I know a lot of people didn't like what they did at the end of the GBA version but I liked having the option. Porom actually ends up as a better healer than Rosa.

Well, there's always the option that it will be based off of the original, but with all of the improvements made to later versions, I'd doubt it.  1 and 2 PSP were based off of the GBA version, so here's to hoping.

You mean visually, or mechanically? Either way I agree, I thought the balance was fucked in the DS version. Not outright broken, but enough to drag out the game too damn much.

Well, I actually meant both, but mechanically mostly.  I felt the GBA version blew it away in pretty much every area other than graphics.

Either way, I'll probably be buying this because I haven't had a chance to play The After Years.

Good thing it has TAY else I wouldn't buy it at all (since I haven't finished FFIV PS1).

Huh, so is this a confirmed English release or a Japanese-only thing?

I'm rather glad they're doing this though. FFIV was one of the few cases where I thought the update to a newer generation platform actually made the game look AND sound worse. 2D Sprites are a plus; now if they can actually make a proper remix or emulation of the music that'll pretty much sell me completely.

It was just announced for Japan, so no word on English release.

It's Square Enix. It's Final Fantasy. They'll be trying to steal everybody's moneys. Therefore, there is a 99.9% chance of a US release, and a 90% chance of a PAL release.

My sister kept mentioning that FF4 should come to the PSP all week so this was surprising news.

I approve especially since I have't played The After

I am excited! :D FF4 is my favorite FF and I'd LOVE to see a remake with updated 2-d graphics. AND being able to play The After Years? Day one purchase for me.
