You are....right. I'm really confused now.=P

Released in '09 in JP, '10 in NA, right?

Yeah. I was just modifying my post to say that as you made this post :P

I didn't play a whole lot of rpgs this year so this will be easy:

1- Demon's souls (I'm in Europe)
2- Nier
3- Final Fantasy 13
4- Resonance of Fate

I also played P3P but that doesn't count since it's basically a 2007 game on a different system. I guess that's it, I'm waiting for ME3 PS3 now. I really enjoyed them all though and even though it's only 5 games I must have put at least 350 hours into them.

We're setting the ball rolling on our Game of the Year feature.  Personally, I'm more interested in seeing individual editors' top picks than the sitewide ones.  The past few years, we've been doing that double blind so I'm also in the dark as to what other editors put in their top fives.

That's what I thought but the cart says '09...Oh wait, you're right March 23rd 2010, I got it for my birthday this year just days after. Okay, so that's my #1.

Hmm.

I spent the most time with DQIX, so I'm probably going to have to say that for me.

Otherwise I enjoyed pretty much every RPG I've played this year.

The ones I enjoyed most, in no particular order:
Ys 7 and Oath
FFXIII
Golden Sun
Atelier Rorona
Nier
New Vegas
Valkyria Chronicles 2
BbS

I did play ME2 this month, but it's not really my style.  I find it to be decent but overrated and not GotY material for me. I haven't played the re-release of Divinity 2 yet, and I think it would be up my alley.

1) Nier
2) Final Fantasy XIII
3) Dragon Quest IX
4) Rune Factory 3 (current portable RPG, loving it)
5) Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
6) Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
7) Arc Rise Fantasia (current console RPG, so-so)
8) Star Ocean TLH International
9) Final Fantasy CC: The Crystal Bearers

If I can tolerate a 20+ hour RPG until the end, I'm probably fond of it in one way or another. Then there are games that I just can't play on because I just don't like it:
Resonance of Fate

Also waiting to open Golden Sun and Lufia for Christmas and will play Valkyria 2 down the line. Good times.

The only 2010 RPGs that I have played (due to insufficient funds) are:

Final Fantasy XIII (Which most certainly is NOT GOTY material.)
Resonance of Fate (Which is possible for a RPG of the Year nomination.)
Infinite Space (This too.)
Valkyria Chronicles II (Eh, this one too.)
Pokemon SoulSilver (It's a remake. Can't include this one.)

I really need to get Dragon Quest IX and Birth By Sleep though. Also a few others.

I just wish I had the time or finances to play everything that I'd like to that came out this year. All things considered and looking back at the list, there were a whole lot of titles on a whole lot of systems that seem worthwhile.

Resonance of Fate  = game of the year

FF13 for its wonderful battle system

Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale - A charming little game that should get at least special mention if not a reward for most innovative/creative.

Mass Effect 2 is king.  Fable III gets second place, but it's an average game at best.  Fallout New Vegas broke repeatedly and I wasn't willing to deal with starting from scratch again after only a few hours in, so it's disqualified.  Final Fantasy XIII doesn't have game crashing bugs and save file corruption, but it's also disqualified for being a shit game.  Final Fantasy XIV gets a special award for being the worst game of the decade, even though the new decade just started.

Assuming you're going by the Japanese release date and not some misunderstanding; using that logic you'd have to retroactively void prior GotY awards at most sites focusing on JRPGs, and quite a few awards from major site. Unless the award is 'best import' then it has every right to win.

I'll have to think about my favorites. And probably post them after the new year starts.

1. Call of Pripyat
2. Strange Journey

These are the only new games I've played since like... Devil Survivor?

Ones I've finished:-
Mass Effect 2
Nier
Ys 7

Work in progress:
Ys: TOiF
Valkyria Chronicles II
Two Worlds 2
Fallout: New Vegas

I guess that's pretty much it.
