You know... I don't think my father would approve of me dating the undead, and you're probably too nice a zombie-pirate for me anyway. Let's just be friends instead.

True, but again, most people aren't posting things because they're tired of it. They're posting them because they don't like them anymore, mostly because of problems in the game that they were able to ignore the first time around.

Which is why my stance is controversial. I'm basically saying the problem isn't the game. It's the gamer.

Oh, I see. Well, I can't say I disagree, but...I also feel as if it doesn't really make a difference one way or another. You know?

I suppose not. But it's still annoying. It's like the kid who eats too much of his favorite cake then complains it doesn't taste good anymore, like it's somehow the cake's fault. No, it's still the same cake. He was just stupid and ate too much.

If I could comprehend that analogy (seriously, everyone I know either paces themselves or eats their favorite food every day and never gets sick of it!), I'm sure I would agree. I know part of the reason I don't like Pokemon is because I beat it too many times. Still, I don't enjoy it anymore because it doesn't provide what I look for in an RPG. The same with The Legend of Zelda - I never beat any Zelda game, but I now find it lacking compared to RPGs, plus I no longer care for the boring puzzles that I always needed a guide book for...not to mention there's never any story until Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (which I still kinda like). Much of what I did like about them are done better in other games.

I see where you're coming from; but the analogy fails on two principles.

1. This isn't about the time period of a child pre-cake and post-cake. This is a time period from childhood to adulthood.

2. Taste buds change as people age. You can adore (for example) pickles as a child yet abhor them as an adult because your taste buds have physically undergone a change that you consciously have no control over.

Games, books, movies, or any other form of entertainment is subject to this same sort of taste evolution. The cake (game) might still taste the same but over time your taste buds have changed to where they prefer a different flavor.

Keep in mind because of this the reverse is also true. You can hate certain games as a kid that you wouldn't play even if paid to; but suddenly grow to enjoy them as an adult.

Arg, I usually try to avoid analogies because they can distract some people from the real discussion (see ZeronHitaro), but I actually thought this one was good enough to inform discussion. Oh well, my mistake.

I'll use the puzzles in LoZ as an example. Now, they bored you and you had to looked up the answers. That's fine. But some complaints I see being made in this thread could be thought of as like your issues with the puzzles, except they enjoyed them and didn't look up the answers. But now that they know the answers, having to solve the puzzle again is no longer fun, but a chore preventing them continuing the more important parts of the game. This person now concludes they don't like the game anymore because of all the puzzles. There's nothing wrong with the puzzles except that the person has all ready done them! That's not a flaw, that's not a change in tastes, that's a person wanting to cakewalk a game they've all ready beaten (or maybe played a lot of). So instead of saying something "I don't like this game anymore because of the puzzles" why not this person say something a little more honest like, "I can't play this game anymore because of the puzzles".

As I mentioned earlier, it kind of sounds like semantics. Except one argument places the fault on the game, the other on the player.

I see where you're coming from; but the analogy fails on two principles.

1. This isn't about the time period of a child pre-cake and post-cake. This is a time period from childhood to adulthood.

Missing the point and focusing too hard on what the analogy isn't rather than what it is.

Alternatively they never actually change.

I agree with the Roast Beast wholeheartedly on this issue.
Finding fault in games that were perfectly fine the first time around seems to be a wasteful use of time. It's like going back and tinkering with all those wonderful childhood memories so they longer exist. It's not the games that are at fault here. It's the players who are going back expecting the same thing they got 5, 10, maybe 15 years ago.
I have many fond memories of games like Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, LOZ: ALTTP, etc. If I were to go back and play them again, I probably wouldn't enjoy therm as much. It doesn't mean these games now suck(or sucked all along). It means what I look for out of games has changed from what it was back then . I'd rather keep my pleasant memories intact than spend inordinate amounts of time dissecting games to find out how bad they may have been.
