Actually, Crysis has the ability changing gimmick, and stages far more open than is standard for FPSes! It's not a shining beacon of originality or anything, but it actually is distinctive beyond having system requirements to either show off your $3000 computer or showing off the sub-$1000 one you bought or made years later when that stuff actually became AFFORDABLE.

Yeah, I liked Crysis for those reasons, from what I've played of it.

Older FPSes actually had fairly open ended stages. It's only recently they've moved back away from that and it's lame as heck that they have., especially since the trend for more open ended environments started with, I don't know, Hexen?

I played the Witcher this year was immensely surprsied at how good it is.

And you can play Crysis fine (high/very high) nowadays with a $600-$700 system. Fucking awesome game if you play it right. Great mods too.
