May be not in 2006, but those sentiments of revenge apparently existed in 1945. Keep in mind that in terms of casualities and the level of violence World War II (regardless whether in Europe or in the Pacific) was not comparable to the wars of the last two to three decades. This is not a justification of what happened back then, but just an attempt of an explanation.
