For me, it's very simple. I just like to see the things I like be recognized.
I also like to see people who do a good job get some props, even if it's just a post on a game site. It's got nothing to do with how blockbuster(or non) the game is.

I like it best when games I wouldn't have paid attention to otherwise are highlighted. As nice as it may be to see a personal favorite win it's even better if I end up discovering a new favorite instead (or have a game I was ignoring be pointed out as worth paying attention to afterall). It doubles as probably the only way these awards can actually be useful.

there's the ridiculous 360 and Wii original soundtrack award winners. WTF?!

Obviously my favorite on 360 would be Nier, and on Wii it would be a toss-up between Shiren the Wanderer, Kirby's Epic Yarn (srsly), and DKC Returns (Kenji Yamamoto arranging David Wise? That's like heaven!)

B-B-B-BUT! I think DJ Hero 2 is a worthy taker of the award.

HEAR ME OUT! Keep in mind, I AM the nerdy Japanophile soundtracks whore, so if I'm willing to say something positive about DJ Hero 2, give it a chance!

I've argued for years that major sites like gamespot/IGN ought to be handing out TWO music awards: one for best licensed soundtrack, and another for best *actually* ORIGINAL soundtrack. But here's the thing about the DJ Hero games. Even though it is a ton of licensed music, it's a ton of remixed/mashed-up licensed music.

The tutorial track for the first DJ Hero was Queen vs Daft Punk. That is frigging awesome. And seriously the remix was more than just "competent." It was good.

I haven't played much of DJ Hero 2 (yet), but I think it's a fair pick. The big websites will almost never give a sound-specific award to a Japanese title, because there are major special interests in Western VGM that expect awards. I don't think they even consider soundtracks to Japanese titles around those parts...

I'll bite.

DJ Hero is fun. I've only played the 1st one as well but I thought it was very interesting. I did play it on a pretty sweet TV and my friend has an impressive sound system, that helped I imagine

Of course! What you say goes without saying, really. I've been looking for Limbo, Nier, and Lords of Shadow to appear. All of which count to ME as under the radar games. Yes, even Castlevania. When popular FPS's can sell upwards of 8 million copies in a week, it's sad to see other quality games struggle to sell so much less.
Limbo actually has gotten some awards.
Thing is, though...
With my limited gaming time, I have to focus on what I KNOW is good. More often than not, this results in me playing a more "known" game that's getting good reviews, as opposed to the unknowns. I squeezed in Limbo because it was only 5 hours long. I squeezed in Nier due to all the (mostly earned) hype around here. But this pushes back all those great games that I truly want to play.
It's tough being a gamer with nowhere near enough time to play all the games that deserve to be played. I'm not alone in this, I now.

Actually, Pat, I recall several sites doing the original/licensed thing in the past. I was surprised not to see it this year.
Doesn't matter to me if it's remixed. It's not an original score. Heck, IMHO, it's not even a real game. Give the award to a REAL game with a REAL score. No, I'm not joking.
Kirby's music IS good. I've been watching(listening?) my wife play it. fantastic game.
BTW:
Daft Punk = cool
Queen = suck

I bought a move and heavy rain yesterday just because the game is on every friggin' list, it better be good.

Play it without Move.  Really.  It's 100% better with the original controls.

Hm, I'm not sure about that, at least for some of things you have to do it feels more natural, you actually do the gestures the character is doing. Like the drawing at the start of the game, you have to draw those lines with the move as the character draws them in the game. Or when you rotate something, you have to do the same movement with your wrist that you would do in real life.

It's fine for the simple stuff during the first couple of segments, but once the controls get more and more complex, it's more and more difficult with the move stuff.

Be warned if you are eating or drinking something while watching that first one, you may (maybe, maybe not) choke on it from laughing.
Hopefully it'll make people wanna play Nier and Vanquish.

That first video couldn't possibly be more unfunny.  It was like watching a typical MadTV skit.

"WHO NAMES A GAME YS AND SPELLS IT Y-S AND WHY IS IT SIX INSTEAD OF SEVEN HERP DERP DERP"

It gets even worse when he pushes the unfunny to its absolute limits.  HAHA HE NAMED A 32X GAME FOR #2 HE IS SO WACKY

I love CGR but I had to shut that video off immediately. I like some of the running gags he has (truxstan) but that was just not good. I'll give it a shot when I'm drunk later and mute it until he starts talking games.

I'm confused.
Why did Sony publish Heavy Rain (being called an interactive movie) but restricts visual novels being published?

graphics

also Kirby's Epic Yarn is cool.

Because Heavy Rain doesn't have under-age school girls having fetish sex? Just a guess... That's assuming you're referring to ero, Japanese visual novels.

Oh, I do remember them saying something about avoiding text only games? If that's what you mean then I suppose the difference is Heavy Rain does feel more like a game than just reading text. Though wasn't White Album released on PS3? JP only, of course.

If you're referencing something else... then I'll get back to you!

Console/handheld ports of those games get the porn scrubbed out anyway, and SCEJ's been way more lenient about these kinds of games (if they even mind!) than SCEA (and SCEE?) have been. It's kind of frustrating how a game that's OK in one region won't be in another for reasons other than breaking laws or being a PR nightmare.

I didn't watch the second one because I found the first one more obnoxious than funny. Forgive me for being a bit slow, but I don't get the joke about calling it 6 not 7. Can someone explain this for me?

I didn't get that either.  Looks like seven to me...

While some of his actual picks were good I thought the whole video was pretty unfunny.  He's trying way too hard.

I think he was just going for that it was #6 in his list.

That's the only way I can make sense of that.
