Got Super Mario 3D Land today! Played thru the first few levels right now and I love it. The 3D is put to very good use in the levels.

I got Mario 3D Land on release day, and Shinobi yesterday. I must say that Shinobi held my attention for much longer with its "one more try, I know I can do it this time" gameplay. Kinda like Dark Souls, except more about twitch skill than understanding behavior.
I loved Mario nonetheless. Gonna try to blast through to the end stages that I hear so much good about. (we used to do extreme speed runs through bowsers final stage in Super Mario 64, so I'm looking forward to some X-TREME trick style levels in 3D Land)

Sounds like Super Mario 3D Land IS vindicating the USE of 3D in games beyond it being a mere gimmick. I just have to wonder how many more games will seriously benefit than platformers (or at least those with platforming elements).

I can see first person dungeon crawlers putting 3D to good use. I can't wait to see what Etrian Odyssey on the 3DS is going to be like. |

Why would you wish for this? I can't imagine it being anything but projectile vomit inducing. The bike stages were projectile vomit inducing in 2D... but the rest of the game would be fun. Kirby's Adventure (3D Classics style) is dominating my time... the slight 3D addition would sell me on many games that were actually good in the first place (like Kirby's Adventure). |
