Ouch. Lost 20000 souls today, I really hate sewer levels.
Code:
I killed the Capra Demon, and then lost 14000 fighting the giant rat. Then I stupidly fell off the cliffs around Firelink Shrine making my way back.
I cleared out most of Depths, only to get cursed by those mist-breathing amphibian things, and then cursed again trying to get back the 6000 souls I lost.

I enjoy other people experiences with Dark Souls just as much as my own.
I stopped for a moment in Duke's Archives because my cousin took his coppy he lended me but now I bought the game for my own on an awesome promotion from Play-Asia. Can't wait to get back to it.
DBP, did you fight the "curse frog" inside that big tree on the way (Great Hollow) on the way to Ash Lake ?
So many of those things come at once that if you hesitate for just a moment you're pretty much screwed.

I haven't got there yet, I just finished Blighttown. That was an absolute hell-hole, not so much for the combat difficulty, but the constant tension of having to make sure you move very carefully everywhere. The boss was surprisingly easy once I summoned Mildred.
I'll be better prepared next time I get cursed. I didn't have any of the items to remove curses, and I had to trek all the way out of the Depths back to the Undead Burg, but I'm well stocked now.

Valley of Defilement IMO is worse. You can barely move and see where you're going, the entire place is a big nasty mess and the more you advance the dirtier and trickier it gets if you are not careful.
It seriously made me feel nauseous the first time I get there.

the valley of defilement made me feel like i needed to take leaps of faith off cliffs to progress. the paths were less hidden in blight town. or maybe cause i was coming off demons souls right into dark souls i was a little more prepared but i think it also made me jump off cliffs looking for things that weren't there. i think the swamp in demon souls is way more terrifying than that the one in dark souls. i'm just glad there aren't olfactory senses built into games cause the thought of walking through raw sewage in the plague fields is nauseating.

So is Dark Souls supposed to be an action game like DMC, Bayo, or Ninja Gaiden? Or is it more of a customization heavy RPG where most of the challenge is figuring out a strategy/trial and error? I'm still confused what the game's about or what it's best compared to.

It's more the latter, though it definitely demands skill. It's just that your aforementioned examples of action are a VERY DIFFERENT type of action, this is slower but more decisive rather than focused on combos and constantly beating on enemies (though that can come up depending on equipment). Think of it more like the 3D Zelda combat system if it became more nuanced and vicious.

Dark Souls director considering an Easy mode, "really sad" about game's fearsome reputation

Nice breakdown of it. I wouldn't be adverse to a future Souls game having an easy mode. As long as they respect that "easy" doesn't mean "half damage from enemies, less HP on baddies." The atmosphere, progression, and tension in Dark Souls are one of the best parts.

So long as easy mode isn't an excuse to make the normal difficulty harder. Well, and the unique online nature means you run a potential risk of breaking base, depending on how it's done. But you could probably do an "easy mode" Well enough simply by minimizing or even nullifying the traditional death penalty, I'm sure the game would feel a LOT easier if you weren't worrying about lost souls/humanity anymore.

i would assume those on easy would almost need their own server otherwise they'd get to certain spots and the big dogs would invade and stab the ever livin shit out of them and then they'd cry fowl.
i could see the easy mode just dropping more souls. i'm alomost surpirsed namdai didn't offer soul booster pack dlc

I'm thinking FROM still has more say in what does/doesn't come out for that game. And fuck, that's one of the last damn things that game needs.

oh i know! if it were me i wouldn't change a thing but if they want a easy mode i'm just trying to imagine scenarios. i could imagine an easy mode with infinite summons or something too. not that that would be what i want out of it. for me i guess i don't think the game would be that appealing if you could just stride through it. it's not like the story is a major component, the gameyness really is the draw.
