The slightly slippery tip wouldn't slip into the hole.

I'm trying to recolour someone's hair in an image using GIMP. I tried a few different things: the wand selection tool as well as creating a new transparent layer over the top and recolouring that, but neither worked out that well because of the complicated and unusual shape of hair and because of the multi-coloured background.

Is anyone aware of an easy way to select that sort of irregular shape out of a single-layer image? Or am I going to have to spend hours trying to outline it properly with the scissors tools?

As far as I know - it's not meant to be a simple lasso job, hair is way too complicated and "fine" in that regard.  For thinner bits, may be a good idea to use a tiny brush and an eraser to fix up the rest.

Thanks Dice.

I pretty much got it sorted in the end. I did a very messy outline with the scissors tools followed by painting it in the colour I wanted. Then I reopened the original image, took the coloured layer and pasted on. Then I just cleaned up the edges with the eraser. It;s not perfect, but it looks fairly good.

Glad it worked out. =)

I like recolouring my hair, try to do it blond before I realize I'd look like an idiot..
