Gamestop,Walmart,Target,Play N Trade, and the other corporate monsters dominate the gaming business here in Los Angeles but a few gaming small time stores remain.I don't visit them since they are often overpriced.Too be honest I only come in there to buy gaming posters or gaming soundtracks.

I buy my games from HMV or GAME, both which are commercial stores. They're alright and sometimes they have good deals. Lately I've been buying my stuff from Amazon however.
Sometimes buy my games from a decent exchange/second-hand store in Newtown or from Game Station. I don't really know of any independent game shops in Edinburgh. :(

Anyone know of a retro-game store in NYC? That place in Chicago in Yoda's post sounds awesome.
edit: eh, google is your friend. Videogamesnewyork on 6th btwn 3rd and 2nd looks like a cool place in case anyone's interested. Might go check it out tomorrow.
There is also another retro store called 8 bit and up on 2nd ave. & 8th street in the st. Marks area. Less stuff but good prices for used stuff. I go there a fair lot whenever I have short work days.
Cool, I'll have to check these out since I work right off Union Square. Generally, I prefer to support local operations as opposed to chains, but with video games it doesn't really matter. Books, music, food, etc. I go local or at least somewhere more environmetnally/socially conscious.

Pretty cool that are other RPGFanners right around the NYC area. I live in Brooklyn, and worked at the 34th st. area. For the two stores emntioned, yeah, videogamesnewyork tends to be more expensive and prices get outdated at times, but the sheer number of stuff is still cool to see, and occasionally get hot titles real early, like with Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. 8 bit has less stuff, but better prices so it's a nice balance. I do support my local stores heavily, but have been shopping at gamestop lately though simply out of convenience. It's right across the street from I am, whereas a lot of stores I used to go to are in inconvenient areas, and have less time to spare. Sometimes, I order online, but am one of the stubborn folks who likes to buy things personally for instant gratification, especially for games I feel in the mood for.

I went to videogamesnewyork today and they do have tons of stuff, I had no idea a place like that exists in the city. I buy most of my stuff on Amazon and Ebay, and I think it's going to stay that way.
Oh, and I am somewhere between Grand Central and the UN.

I have a semi-local place (most states, it only has one location and quite a few in Ohio)
http://www.yourbuybacks.com/
It charges like a bastard for a bunch of games but fairly good selection with at least cover art intact
some of these prices are me trying to remember
dot Hack part 1 around $20 ($10 at gamestop)
dot Hack part 4 about $70 (or maybe $80 in shitty condition and $28 at gamestop)
Xenogears $50 (got it a long time ago)
Bouncer about $40 (was $40 new at gamestop but $3 used)
Stella Deus about $30 ($6 but a bitch to find at gamestop)
Suikoden Tactics $12 (almost got this because it had an OST, $6 at gamestop) and Suikoden 4 ($10 at both places)
I got FF9 at VGMX for $15
http://www.vgmx.com/
gamestop beats most prices from this place
It has just alright staff, and located in a semi-bad area.
At least it has a disc cleaning service.
Thinking about visiting a couple extra places.

Gamestop or bust around here.
Yeah, I buy from Amazon.
It's really hard not to when they offer release day delivery for $1 and often give a $10-20 credit to your account for pre-ordering certain titles. Though I hear smaller stores like what Yoda described are more willing to break street date so i guess that's a plus for the consumer.

The place I was at is strictly retro-style stuff.
I'm probably going to get most of my old games from them. I'm finding that bidding on ebay is a joke. Unless you can find a good buy it now deal ebay is worthless.

My local game stores are mostly all overpriced, and all the "New" games have cases that look like they've been used. Also, if there's a game I really want that isn't a big selling blockbuster, I'm gonna need to go through at least 5 or 6 stores to find it. Support your local game store? Yeah right.
I would also kill for a retro game store around here. I miss walking into a shop and looking at a PS1 game, contemplating on buying it or not.

That's weird, aren't they part of the same chain?
I'm in upstate NY. There's a few good ones. There's that one on Lark st, I think they just put one in the Crossgates mall (which will be overpriced I'm sure) and I have a friend that runs a spot in Johnstown. They all do trades mostly, retro too.
