Virtue's Last Reward:

I'm scared of the Save Bug that's plaguing 3DS owners.  But I'm having a ton of fun.  I love the puzzles, they're really making me use my noodle!
I think Alice is brilliantly designed... if it wasn't for her stupid ass fucking "top".  The jacket is cool, but the "O" coverup is just impractical and stupid; hell, Lotus' outfit was even more reasonable.
Baby K is fascinating adorable, especially in the Rec Room. xD

And Grim; I'm sorry.  Worst thing when that happens; happened with my terabyte recently... and when you buy a terabyte, usually it's with the intention of putting a LOT on there (now gone).
Enjoy Witcher 2; better than the first game by a thousand.

My local indy video game store broke street date for Ass Creed 3.

Holy cow, what a pretty freaking game.  The first setting was beautiful, and the series really reminds you of the intricate details the dev team focuses on that really make the series a joy to explore.
An email early on from the weird she-man of the Animus crew (Rebecca?) send an email that's pretty outright about the "improvements in the Animus system" (i.e.; the game as compared to previous installments).
Love the new interface as well.  But I think Desmond turned uglier.
Which reminds me... suppose they'll just get Kristen Bell for the Ass Creed flick? Har har har

I finally got the Platinum in Metal Gear Solid 2 tonight.  I doubt that any platinum (except perhaps the Demon's Souls platinum, and I'd have to check on that!) will ever be this difficult.  Between the 50 hours of VR missions, some of which were ridiculously hard, and having to collect dog tags off of soldiers on every mode between very easy to extreme (and beat extreme), along with all the other crap it required, it was a marathon.  I'm proud.  And now, I shall take a well-deserved break and play Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (which I downloaded off of PSN a few days ago for this very purpose) and enjoy a game that is only moderately fucking hard.

picked up a refurbished 20gb hard drive, installed Wither 2, and now I'm good to go.
I've just played through the first hour or so, with King Foltest attacking the traitor guy. The game looks and sounds fantastic.
The fighting isn't the smoothest ever, but I'll get used to it.

Man congrats, is not easy getting that Platinum Trophy.

The one from Demon's Souls requires farming to get this:

Pure Bladestone

I'm pretty sure a lot of players asks in forums or in the game itself to other players if they have the damn thing or not to drop the item and get the Platinum Trophy. I spent 3 days farming for hours trying to get the stone but it was just a waste of time...

All the mentions of Legend of Mana in this topic the other day filled me with the urge to dust that bitch off and give it a spin.

It's still fantastic.  I've got a fondness for the lighthearted, witty banter and charm this game has...well, that it has when it isn't revolving around brooding, bejeweled cunts and dead furries.

Atelier Iris is ... okay so far.  No beef with the old-school combat or the wide variety of field actions (whack everything with your staff!), but the basic plot, characters, and dialog are a little weak at best.  Synthesizing mana items, weapon crystals, shop items, and special healing for Lita is pretty dope.  I'll definitely see this one through to the end, especially if it's under 30 hours like I heard.

In addition to Maximo: Ghosts to Glory I'm playing the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection.  I never had the opportunity to play Ico last generation -- it was always too expensive used due to its rarity by the time I found out about it -- so I've been very excited to try this.  Thus far it's great, though I do find the combat tedious.  The atmosphere is great, the scenery is beautiful, and the puzzles are fun.  I'm also very impressed by the way the game maintains a good pace and remains interesting in spite of being so minimalistic.  At this point I don't think it quite stands up to Shadow of the Colossus, but that's an extremely high bar to set.

Assassin's Creed 3 is fucking awesome.  It's like a hybrid of AC2 and Red Dead Redemption, my two favorite games of this console generation.

So between Something Awful being on a Lurker :frogout: kick lately and seeing Level 5 having their 'Other M' moment with Gundam AGE I decided to pay a visit to the LP Archives and run through the Dark Cloud 2 LP just to see if one of their more highly regarded games also suffers from atrocious writing and blatant misogyny as pretty much everything else they've done did. It does.

In all honesty I went through most of the LP assuming that Max(the main character)'s mom was going to die after spending the entire game as his metaphorical carrot on a stick like a cheap piece of drama fodder and I'll give them credit for not killing her off (not that she wasn't ripped away from Max for the sake of cheap melodrama). Of course, she didn't need to when EVERY GODDAMN VILLAIN IN THE GODDAMN GAME DID (save for the Russian Mafia Clown from the beginning who simply gets jobbed like a cheap piece of comic relief and the Bonus Boss who's only purpose is to be the bonus boss). There seriously wasn't a goddamn fight with these guys that didn't come laden with melodramatic flashbacks and death speeches and all of them were nothing but one-dimensional villainous caricatures with obligatory villainous monologues and rants as their only development prior (except for the first fight with the villain that killed Monica(the female character)'s dad which ended with somebody else dying and giving the requisite flashbacks and death speeches instead, and the Rocker Doctor who just got hauled off to sea by the game's Larpas tribe but got his requisite sob story relayed by his descendent in his stead). And worse still is that both Gaspard (the guy who offs Monica's dad at the beginning) and later Emperor Griffon (the big bad; but not the BIG big bad) both pull the exact same maternal abandonment issues that Max's been pulling since the very start of the game except they were shunned (boo hoo :qqsay:) which is why they immediately turned to "Rarr! I must destroy the world! Rarr!" despite said maternal figures advising otherwise (and given that Max is deprived of his mother too because she's a selfish whore who had to do the nasty in the pasty but conveniently cannot stay due to belonging in the future, he's likely to be Dark Cloud 3's big bad (but not BIG big bad because he needs to turn out to be sympathetic and misguided too) if Dark Cloud 3 ever gets made (god forbid)).

And then there's Monica, the other protagonist, who's entire role in the game can be summed up in five points.
- She's a magical, time-traveling, princess, from the future.
- Who's holding the Triforce of Wisdom blue plot macguffin that enables travel to the past.
- And is out to avenge her father by Grrr-ing at the current antagonist.
- Also to exposition at the latest plot objective like a tour guide.
- And to serve as the 'second' protagonist (i.e. a mechanical upgrade to Dark Cloud 1's solo adventure).

Although by the end of the game.
- She's strictly inferior to Max in every way outside of her ranged weapon's homing feature.
- And stops moonlighting as a tour guide the moment somebody else shows up to correct her or Max points out the obvious.
- Plus she's the first to forgive anybody who brings up a sudden sob story regardless of what they might have taken from her.
- And she loses her plot macguffin (and so does Max) because good is dumb and evil will always triumph.
- Not like it matters anyways since Max can and will travel back in time without her or her macguffin (and the plot forces you to do this for a plot coupon at one point).

And while I could go on all night ranting about the plot holes, the establishing and the subsequent breaking/ignoring/bullshitting of the setting's rules, the dumb plot twists, the blatant copying of Zelda series/generic fairy tale elements/tropes, mechanics that favor Max over Monica, the myriad of convenient contrivances, pretty much everything that happens at the end of chapter 5, all of chapter 7, and the nothing that happens at chapter 4 I'm just going to leave it on the note that the game left it on as the story was all just a dream (or was it? :tinfoil:).

The TL:DR is that Level 5 REALLY needs to get bought out and gutted for their technical talent as that's the only worthwhile thing about them. I'd check out Jenne De Arc but I have neither access to a copy or LP of it.

Monica and the ranged weapons were for the most part useless.  All you really needed was Max and "Steve" and the game was yours.  Monica's Monster Badge was espcially tough to build and especially weak compared to anything Max had.

I loved the hell out of Dark Cloud 2. Such a great game. Plus, it was stunning to look at, had a great soundtrack, and the town building was fun.  I'd say the only negative for me was the repetitive dungeons. I don't even remember anything about the story.

The Witcher 2 is pretty darn good so far. I don't like the weird sounding music that plays during fighting, but otherwise I can't complain. We'll see how it goes as I get further in.

Dark Cloud 2 is one of those PS2 RPGs I still need to pick up. That, Godhand, and the obscure Evergrace sequel.

A little further in Bowser's Inside Story. Just got the vacuum attack. I like how enemies behave differently, with regards to that. It increases the earthboundsian flair to it.

Also I have a mancrush on Bowser.

Assassin's Creed 3 is still pretty good, but it really needed another few weeks of debugging.  I can live with the audio/visual quirks, but I've experienced several bugs that have prevented me from finishing missions.  I've had two instances of being unable to complete an escort mission because my escort got caught in a blob of people and wouldn't move.  I had an equipped sword vanish in the middle of combat, which was odd.  I was riding a horse and tried to jump a fence.  It got stuck in a stray pixel or something; it wouldn't budge and it wouldn't let me get off.  I had to fast travel to get free.

The worst one was when I had fought a lengthy battle to free a fort.  My last objective was to kill the captain of the fort.  As I was fighting him, he just vanished into the ether.  It didn't count as a kill either, so I had to leave and let the place reset so I could do it all over again. :(

It's a good game when it is working properly, but I don't think it would trump Assassin's Creed 2 even if it were completely functional.
