Wow, you guys went all out in here. Lots of great suggestions in here.

I remember reading in an article about Albert Odyssey way back in the day in Gamefan. I really wanted to play it at the time, but being the broke teenager that I was, I never had the chance.

I'm going to start off slow and probably just grab Nights and work my way from there.

If there is one thing to take from Albert Odyssey... it has one of the best overworld themes ever composed.

You weren't kidding. This is a great overworld theme. I've never heard this one before. I've always been fond of Revelations:Persona's overworld theme, but this is a top contender now.

What's really awesome is that the composer (Naoki Kodaka) was one of the two composers for Batman (NES) and Journey to Silius (NES). OMG they were probably the two best soundtracks on the NES.

I had never heard of albert odyssey until this thread... looked it up and it's very interesting, but the battles look painfully slow.

Well they look that way cause they kinda are.  The battle system is about as uninspired as it gets.  The graphics are nice looking and the game has good music but the game isn't that great overall imo.  Working designs translation is funny at least

I thought Working Designs best translations were Vanguard Bandits and Arc the Lad Collection.  I liked Lunar but something didn't settle well with me there.  The story was good but I couldn't get into the music or battle system.  Just little gripes but it's whatever I guess :)

Vangard bandits had a fantastic translation. My only complaint about that game was how they hid the way to properly level up your character. You get new skills only if you boost the dorrect stats. 'Eff up, and you ruin your character. I'm not at all ashamed to say I used a guide for that part of the game bexause it was so friggin lame.

Albert Odyssey's strengths are its excellent sprite-work, an amazing soundtrack, and hilarious dialogue courtesy of Zach Meston when he worked at Working Designs.  I don't think a game has ever been crammed full of more sexual innuendo than Albert Odyssey.

Just to illustrate my point, I fired up my old save file of Albert Odyssey from 11 years ago (seriously), where my characters are in the town of Gigarl.  Below is dialogue from the first two townspeople I ran across.

This game is amazing.  It's why I have a whole section on my website dedicated to it.  Fuck the haters.

I'm not hating on it. Just said the battles look slow.

I just bought the import of Soukyugurentai and an Action Replay cart.  I've spent about $500 on my Sega Saturn collection.  I need more imports.
