Sega Saturn
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:08:21 PM »
So, I just got a Sega Saturn for free from my work with a bunch of games with it like:NBA Jam, Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop.

What games do I need for Saturn? I've never owned one before so I'm kind of excited to play some games I missed out on.

I'm trying to get my cousin to either lend or sell me his (modded to play imports)

The absolute best game (imho) is Guardian Heroes.

Tons of good shmups too, but it's been years.

Concur with Fighters Megamix.  Only fighting game where you can play as a car.

As much as Sega let me down with the saturn 2 games alone made me not regret buying it:

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Nights

2 of the very best games ever created. There's a Nights remake for the PS2 but it was only released in Japan.

Get the original panzer dragoon and the sequel panzer dragoon zwei.

Others I recommend are:

Deep Fear, Fighters Megamix, Guardian Heroes.

There's also Burning Rangers. I enjoyed it back then but the game was too ambitious for the hardware, it probably doesn't hold up very well graphics wise. You should try it though.

Anyway, it's worth buying the system for the PD trilogy alone, that's how good it is.
Currently playing: Uncharted 3, Dark Souls, Team ICO Collection, Atelier Totori, Child of eden.

Thanks, guys!

I'm definitely going to get Nights.

What about Shining:The Holy Ark? I heard that was a good game.

There's is no way in hell I can afford to get Panzer Dragoon Saga at the moment. I just checked Ebay and one of the listings is at $150 with a few hours left.

The problem with the saturn is that most of the best games never made it out of japan. Some were later ported to the psone and released worldwide like grandia and dead or alive but others, like radiant silvergun (considered by many the best shmup ever) never made it.
Saturn bomberman is widely considered the best bomberman ever.
If you're into 3D fighting games, Last Bronx is worth considering.

I never played shining the holy ark but I remember it getting 80+ reviews.

Chronix mentioned Astal, I never played it but the game sure was beautiful.
Currently playing: Uncharted 3, Dark Souls, Team ICO Collection, Atelier Totori, Child of eden.

Shining The Holy Ark is old school dungeon crawling.  The narrative isn't particularly strong, but if you want to play Shining Force 3 at some point, Shining The Holy Ark is a prequel, story-wise.

As far as Panzer Dragoon Saga goes, you don't necessarily need to permanently own it... but you really do owe it to yourself to play it.  It really was ahead of its time considering the era it released in and is still a damn good game even now.  Look at the $150 as a deposit that you can get back after you're done playing the game by selling it right back on Ebay.

With Radiant Silvergun, normally I'd recommend giving that a go as well since it's one of the most impressive titles on the platform, but the HD rerelease on Xbox 360 is imminent so... save your cash.

K let's not forget Mr. Bones shalln't we? (shalln't is definitely a word)
THE cult game of the system IMO.

Also get everything Panzer
and NiGHTS like a motherfucker.

I still have a copy of Albert Odyssey lying around that I epically found at the flea market for $10 a few years ago but have never played it.

Games That Defined The Sega Saturn

It was such a good feeling to have sega rally in my living room when the game was still the hottest thing at the arcades. It's not something I would recomend today though. You can find the sega rally that was released for current gen consoles for dirt cheap. Daytona USA was a pretty bad port, even sega admitted that it was rushed.
Virtua Cop and House of the dead should be played with a lightgun.
Currently playing: Uncharted 3, Dark Souls, Team ICO Collection, Atelier Totori, Child of eden.

It was dumb that "The House of the Dead" wasn't released on the Wii along with "The House of the Dead 2 & 3". Three sucks.  One and two are the best and we will never get four on consoles :(
