On a sort of lighter side of things.  I have to say it is amazing to see the amount of coverage we get.  When Haiti got hit, we got mostly shots after the catastrophe hit.  But Japan, a first world nation, everyone carrying some sort of recording device - we got to see so much more during it.  And it's been amazing to see.  You can tell to some extent Japan is prepared for this, earthquakes being a very real threat to the country (and a general risk of living there); so as much as I'm really sad for the loss, I'm super curious to see how they'll come out of it.  Hell, they took a ton of measures even after the Kobe earthquake in '95.

I've been keeping in contact with a good deal of people from Japan.  Mainly all video game composers and few friends I know that are in Japan.  I feel like its just going to get worse than it already is.  This is just terrible :(

You know video game composers personally, Ivalice?

Check out this video of one of the buildings in Japan wavering as the earthquake hits. That's some good building design.

That's incredible.

Has anyone here been in an earthquake? I don't want to make light of it but I would like to experience a mild one some day.

I'd also like to see a tornado... from a safe distance.

I slept through the Olympia one that hit about ten years ago.

Only ever experienced mild tremors. Malaysia is relatively safe from most natural disasters though we occasionally get the damaging aftershock of a tsunami or earthquake. Our problems lay mostly with floods, as far as I can recall. This one time we got hit by a tremor while I was on the 25th story of a building; the entire building tilted a little bit, I only noticed when I dropped some beads and they all went rolling in one direction. :P

Been keeping track of this current quake. Basically all over the BBC-- the videos are fascinating, in a morbid kind of way.

No, not personally but I talk to them on Facebook alot, they updated their status on how they were.  I'm so worried about them.  Why should I be worried about someone I will probably never meet?  Simple, i'm human, I care, I have feelings and there music has saved my life.

I was woken up by a very mild earthquake one time. The Adirondacks get small ones now and then and the effects can be felt around central New York.
I've heard people talk about other ones but I must have slept through them.

My roommate's girlfriend is from Japan and apparently her brother would have been in the city where the epicenter was, but he just barely did good enough on an exam (~2 points or something) to be able to get into the better school located further away.

I was watching some videos of buildings swaying but didn't collapse.  Shows you how durable some of their buildings really are :)

Well, I'm from Chile and like many people know we got hit by that "lovely" 8.8 earthquake last year. And... the disturbing thing of earthquakes of this magnitude comes after the earthquake is finish to be honest, mainly because you don't what is going to happen and if there's gonna happen something worse.

Since shit can always get worse. I really hope that none of you have to experience an earthquake this big in your lifetime, I got lucky that I wasn't in the epicenter of the earthquake but still, is really hard to get some sleep after that or even your sense of normal life style back.

Also, some people in my city (Valparaiso) is losing his shit with these tsunamis.
