Help with Patapon 1

Tutorial is giving me a hard time.
I have okay rhythm and I keep pressing square square square circle (pata pata pata pon) and it always works, but it seems impossible to get past because it never lets me go on even if I get it right about 10 times in a row.
I do occasionally make really deep drum beats, so should I time it perfectly to get those really deep drum beats consecutively?
It seems like a neat game and I'd hate to take it back especially since I got it used and in perfect (or close to it) condition.

I think that you have access to attack (pon pon pata pon) in the tutorial if I remember correctly - there are some towers or something you have to destroy to continue.
