Sword and spear are the 2 best ones.
For 3rd I usually go chakram or bow because the AI rarely dies with it.

Weapon are for losers just punch everything to death. Be the motherfucking Kenshiro. Actually with the mystic hair pipes and colorful outfits and rampant androgyny Juda might be a better analogy, wevz.

Except Juda was nanto which is more like scratching to death and less punching I guess. I don't know. There was that one Nanto guy that kicked things. Man whatever this is hard just use nunchucks.

While I suggested 1h Swords its more based on the fact that you can get any weapon up to 999 power through retarded amounts of tempering along with the fact that 1h Swords are slightly faster than 1h Axes. Plus Shields which are the heaviest thing you can equip in addition to the Full Plate Mail.

Personally I went with 2h Axes during the majority of my runs using Axes of Evil despite the hit box issues for it's juicy All Stat Boost effect. Well as far as anyone would use a weapon when in the company of a Land Dragon that I lucked out on in my first run. Its base stats maxed out at the drop of the hat though it's attack and armor aren't as so. Not like it matters that much when most things like to burn and Land Dragons REALLY like to BURN (nothing like watching a dozen or so health bars vanish in seconds which made Nightmare mode semi bearable back when I was a kid with plenty of patience and WAY too much time on my hands (nothing could ever make No Future mode in any way, shape, or form bearable)).

I got a bit freaked out the first time I played the game, and the "No Future" screen popped up.  It was subtle, but I wasn't expecting it...

I would love to play this game again, despite the hate it gets, I thought the tales were extremely charming.  Further brought to life by the gorgeous graphics, Yoko's music, and the lovely character art that really emphasizes the "storybook" look.  I'm a sucker for atmosphere in games like that, I love when a game hits a perfect design like that.  Venus & Braves did it, FFX did it, Uncharted did it, Resident Evil did it, this did it. (there are more examples, but I'm sparing you).

Well, I've never played a game from this franchise in my life and it seems that Legend of Mana is it's own thing and not a sequel to other games in the series, is that correct? I'm just asking because I don't like getting lost with stories in RPGs.

Every Mana game is more or less standalone.

Also, playing a Mana game for the story is uh...well, you'll be disappointed.

The first one was good for it's time, the second was serviceable at least, third was completely forgettable, and Legend had some interesting arcs at least. Sword somehow managed to both water down and load up the plot with Power of Friendship bullshit at the same time (and this was a remake of the GameBoy game from 91). And anything from the World of Mana compilation (includes Children, Heroes, Dawn, and Friends which was banished to the cellphone market long before the iPhone twinkled in Apple's eye) was, much like the games themselves, utter horse shit.

And yes, Legend is it's own thing that the World compilation clumsily tried to tie the rest of the series into (as well as actually trying to tie the various games of the series into each other in an equally clumsily manner because they really had little to no real connection between them in the first place).

The thing I like most about Mana (besides the graphics/music) is the the approach it took. So many RPGs have this long, sweeping, grand story, but LOM came along and did more of an anthology of short stories approach, and I thought it was really unique. I can't really think of another RPG that's done that kind of approach, though there probably is one I'm forgetting.

LoM's story stuff is more heavily grounded in the rule of cool than it is in strictly making sense. You have like, magic schools, penguin pirates, all the creepy shit with the dudbears and bartenders, and so on. It has its own kind of oblique logic and if you play it enough it'll make its own sort of oblique sense. It's all pretty dreamlike though which was probably the intent.
