2 had the same characters as 1, which I found kinda stupid honestly. I think that's why I passed on 3. I always kinda felt like I should track down 3 and give it a shot though.
Erm... what? Other than than Ryu & Nina (who are in every BoF) and Bleu the secret character, everyone else is different. They aren't even of the same race.
BoF1:
Ryu
Nina
Bleu
Bo (wolf)
Karn (?)
Gobi (fish)
Ox (ox)
Mogu (mole)
BoF2:
Ryu
Nina
Bleu
Bow (dog)
Katt (cat)
Sten (monkey)
Jean (frog)
Spar (plant)
Rand (armadillo)

Nina 1 was briefly in 2... after one of the shittiest dungeons ever.

I'd say my favorite is 3, followed by 2.
I hardly remember 4 though but I remember I enjoyed it. 2 is quite difficult though.
2 and 3 have "dark" stories. Although 2 focuses on a false-religion plot (as Dice said) whereas 3 focuses on what you believe is right or wrong.

3 got me into the series. It was an awesome game, way beyond it's time. The ability to customize your characters stats they way you liked through masters (It is possible to get a Garr with super high agility and faster than Rei), the dragon system, the story, the music, all of it was a great experience. I can safely say that BoF 3 is one of my top 5 games ever made. 4 was a good title, but it lacked the fun I had in 3, and 2 and 1 were cool, but I couldn't get into them as well as 3. 5....idk I just didn't like it.

2 drove me nuts, the plot was all that had me going (mind you, the spells and sprites were awesome too). The dungeons in BoF2 were some of the worst ever -- usually long tunnels with collecting crap en route. The encounter rate was high enough, and the fact you couldn't run made backtracking from a dead end that much more "enjoyable". x(
I remember some of BoF 3's puzzles sucking ass too. For some reason, I had trouble with the instruction for the roping-the-sea-junk game with Garr.

After reading through this thread, I've become interested in playing BoF. I can really only get 1 and 2 though... So should I try the SNES or GBA versions?

Play 3, lol.
Um, I think the only difference is slight aesthetic changes between SNES and GBA. Whatever you can get is probably the best, the GBA does have some fine art tune ups if you're into that I guess.

Breath of Fire 5 director Makoto Ikehara made a tweet, complaining that people figured out the official name.
Is it merely a coincidence that a Breath of Fire director chimed in on this perceived new Breath of Fire game?

That's the thing, it's hard for me to find Playstation games. But I have access to just about any SNES or GBA games (I have some friends with hobbies that I enjoy). I can probably get either, but new art does sound nice...

Lore I suppose. Decent battle system, engaging and usually deep story. Decent enough music. It doesn't suck. :)

About the GBA versions of the first two games. I remember reading that those versions have better translation in comparison to the original releases.
Also, I didn't know that the director of Dragon Quarter has been involved in this. Now I'm a little (just a little bit) more interested in this.
