It doesn't suck. :)

And that's actually quite a feat given recent offerings in console RPGs :P

But, there hasn't been a new Breath of Fire since 2003...

I liked 4 best. Mostly because of Fou Lu and his story and awesome animations like Fadedsun's avatar. I think I also saw DEEP elements that may or may not have actually been there.

Code:
Are greedy samurai and enemy soldier there because they had a change of heart? Or did Ryu's god influence change it for them?

After that 2 > 3 > 1, although 3 has probably aged better than 2. Never played dragon quarter and I regret it. It got a lot of hate, but it got a lot of praise too.

I loved Fou Lu's story in 4.  Wonderful aside to the game and quite touching.  I found the characters much more endearing in general than in 3, even if it did have a somewhat better battle system.

Though, I remember being confused when the title first came out, and little stupid me was confused with them calling the girl Mami.  I always thought, like "a mammy?"  The rag on the head of both of them didn't help how I saw the mammy type.  I kicked myself for it later.

It doesn't suck. :)

Yeah, that's why I found saying that was especially important.

so what is it about this series that people adore so much? story? gameplay? characters?
It's one of those games where everything fits well together. No aspect is amazingly disproportionate to another. To call it perfect would be a lie, but it truly leaves a satisfying feeling in the pit of your stomach at the end. All I can say is take a shot at one of them, maybe not 5 first, but any of the first 4 should bring you in decently. 3 is honestly the best by my standards, but I'd play that maybe second, just to make it that much more attractive. 2 or 4 are great starts, and 1...well 1 is very basic, but still better than some of the recent shit made.

Minor site change: the dragon has a heart (daaawwwwww) and some sort of green field scrolls the background (illuminating the dragon).  Not very BoF-like.

Was anyone expecting BOF, really?

This is going to be an action game, not an RPG.

Capcom wants to be an American company, they're never going to make a JRPG again.

Funny, I was thinking that a few moments ago.  What the hell happened to them?  They really jumped ship almost.  I think Megaman is the last big series with giganto-eye (ie; anime).  Ah well.

They (but not only they) started to believe the hyperbole that Japan sucked, and instead of focusing on making good games, they started focusing on making "Western" games.

It's been a very long time since a Breath Of Fire game. To say it's not very "BoF-iike" isn't fair. They could be going for a new style. I'm not going to get my hopes up too high, but I'll be very happy if it is a new BoF game.

I retract my statement. Apparently some people found some background screens.

Some are saying that because of those background screens, there's no chance that it's a new Breath of Fire, but I disagree, I could see those backgrounds being in a Breath of Fire game. Heck, they're general enough to be in any game.

I almost salute then for it, considering graphic novels are potential chart-toppers over there (I'm not a fan of the genre).

Wishful thinking is still pegging this as a BoF.  Thus far though, it "feels" like it's going a more open-concept, hack n slash, Drakengaard route.  Yup, all that from a splash screen (and Capcom tendencies as of late).

You're probably right, but I would say it's a 99.9% chance it won't be a BOF game.

I want time to fly.  I'm curious regardless.  A new adventure title from Capcom colours me a curious purple.
