A dark game?

So the friend I co-own a PSP with (... (maybe borrow (... (steal)))) asked me for help getting a new game for her PSP. She gave the following prerequisites: 1) it has a dark story and 2) she'd prefer it to be a JRPG.
So far the options we've come up with are Persona, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and Alundra. Chances are we'll get one of the first two and Alundra (maybe all 3 if finances are good).
Anyway, my questions is what suggestions do you have with the qualifiers above?
A little note: she has said that Brave New Story and Ys 1&2 Chronicles sound good.

If it'll hold Jello, Utah will put Jello in it.

One thing to note is that SMT: Persona is pretty archaic. I had trouble getting past the awkward controls and very, very old-school battles and difficulty.
Lenneth I liked more, but there's still a big barrier there - the game is incredibly complex and to get the best endings, you not only need to play on higher difficulties but you also need to do EVERYTHING right.
Alundra is $6.
My suggestions?
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. Less "dark" and more "serious", it's easily the best title on the platform, IMHO.
Both of the Star Ocean games are great, but less serious/dark.

She already has it; it's my first SMT game.

Tactics Ogre can be rather dark at times, and it's an excellent game. It's more political than the aforementioned FFT, whether or not that's a good thing is up to you.

It's a good title. The cutscenes suck nut, but the rest is top-notch. ^__^d

I've liked the story, I just hate how stupid Terra is (haven't played the others yet...).

All the story's are crap; Aqua has probably the best, but half of it...maybe more, is her trying to catch up to the other two retards. Really, like with any KH, you're playing for that "middle" part, and the ending drama. Otherwise, their tales can be summed up in a sentence, because story-wise, the Disney stuff is just filler and a selling point.

I thought the first two had a really good story...
And I kind of liked 358/2 Days story if I remember right.

For a really dark and bizarre story, I'd go with SMT: Strange Journey. The apocalyptic mood gave me chills.
