Might just be different perceptions but classic seemed to work just fine for me when I played a demo at Wal-Mart. It wasn't as smooth as I remember S3&K being but all in all it was more than enjoyable to me.

He takes quite some time to get moving, changing directions is a pain, even when you're standing still. There's also quite a big delay between the button press and Sonic actually jumping, especially if he's got some speed. To me, it just didn't feel right at all, the game felt best when I was just holding a single direction button and running straight ahead, allowing the game bounce me about, doing anything else was a pain.

Took me a while to understand why this comment felt off to me until I played classic again this afternoon. I think the problem people have with classic Sonic is they're playing him wrong. It takes only a fraction of a second more for classic Sonic to get up to full speed compared to modern. You don't build speed quickly by walking; you're supposed to Spin Dash. Same way it's been done since ye olden Genesis era. It takes only slightly longer to build than modern's "Boost" system however classic can do it without any gauge requirements. Once you learn how to spin dash as a reflex you'll find classic's movement to be quite natural.

... I have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about Maxximum. Mind you, Generations has been a huge deal for the old Sega fans around here, so we even pulled out the original on Genesis and played them side by side. While the "classic Sonic" in Generations has his physics set a little differently, they're actually an improvement over the old mechanics (ie: getting hit by an enemy bounces you back a bit farther, rings stay around a touch longer, it's easier to control Sonic while airborne, etc). "Modern Sonic" is also vastly improved. We did a Dreamcast side-by-side for that one, and targeting enemies is way, way more accurate. Not only that but the general feel is more grounded and far less slippery than Adventure and Adventure 2.

The demo's been aces all around, with the only mild grumbling coming from purists who wanted things "exactly the way they were back then", and even those in my circle of friends who're like that have come over pretty quickly once they've had a few playthroughs.

Praise from both IGN and Gametrailers? Welcome back buddy, welcome back.

Here's hoping Sega sticks to this formula for both modern and classic approaches for at least the rest of the decade. XD

I think I may have already mentioned this, but I've never been much into Sonic. Its been ages since I played an oldschool Sonic game, and my impressions of this new one are based entirely on the PSN demo. I didn't like how the "classic mode" Sonic controls, because he felt heavy and seemed to promote running in one direction really fast rather than precise platforming (then again, maybe that's what Sonic games ware always about). Either way, I had a hard time adjusting to this and didn't find it very enjoyable.

They already said there aren't any plans to use classic sonic again. Sucks, I know, specially now that they actually got it right.

If it sells, you can be sure they'll reconsider these plans. With enough praise, I can see a few new "classic" Sonic titles coming out as downloads at the very lest. They already have the engine, so I'm  sure they'll be more than willing to cash in on it.

Played the demo and the only thing I can say is that I haven't had this much fun with a Sonic game since Adventure 2 on GameCube.

Kinda scary to see that Sega finally got their shit together.

I see what Maxx is saying about the controls. I think the old Sonic games had a bit of delay between pressing jump and when Sonic actually jumped. Now it happens right when you press the button. Doesn't effect the game in anyway, but I noticed it felt different than the classic Sonic games.

Does anyone else think that little thing floating around Sonic giving advice sounds like Rise from P4?

Just finished the demo. Wow! That was awesome and a lot of fun. I haven't played a Sonic game in a really long time. I'd buy this, but after a price drop.

Don't forget that the 16 bit games were 60 fps and this is 30 fps. I'll post impressions after I play it on PC, maybe it will feel better with the same frame-rate as the old games.

Quick Look: Sonic Generations

Sonic returns, and he's brought his friend Sonic with him! Look at all that blast-from-the-past processing™.

This and the demo = Sold!

It feels so weird being interested in a Sonic game again, I really didn't expect this to be good in the first place so it was a pleasant surprise. :)

Has the release date changed? I've been looking all over town, and see not a single copy for any system. I know I'm in the boondocks, but usually video games are an exception, and we get them a day late, at the LATEST. I want to get the 3DS version because there's enough occupying my Wii/360 right now, and this is the kind of game that would be great on the go.

No, actually me beef was that the delay is still there and it makes platforming difficult. Ah well, if it pleases the original Sonic fans then there really isn't any reason to complain.
