GoG.com must haves.
« on: May 07, 2011, 03:54:24 PM »
I'm been playing console RPGs all my life and I'm now wanting to branch out to PC RPGs. I'm wondering what are some must play games on gog.com.

I know Planescape and Fallout are a couple of examples, what else?

Arcanum is inherently broken, but it's one of my favorite games on GOG.  Fallout 1/2 are old-school, but awesome.  VERY difficult, though, compared to modern games.

Septerra Core is very good if you like JRPGs, as it feels much like one.

Also, totally not an RPG, but Freespace 2 is fantastic.

There's exploits and probably some mods if the difficulty in Fallout is a problem. I also think Fallout marks the point where they're as old school as I can take, the game doesn't depend on, say, memorizing key layouts and whatnot to really get into so you can figure most things out intuitively.

But, yeah. Anything Bioware/Black Isle's a sure bet, and there'll be the Witcher in just a few days so that's definitely a must-have RPG.

I tried the original Fallout but absolutely couldn't stand its open-endedness and lack of direction on what exactly the hell to do. Your call, though.

Fallout 1 was the game that made me absolutely fall in love with the series.  I actually started the game over at one point, because I found myself saved into a fight that I couldn't win AND keep my dog alive.

Divine Divinity and the Baldur's Gate games are must haves.

Neverwinter Nights packs a lot of value if you can get into user-made modules (not fantastic, but there are a lot of half-decent ones). However, the included campaigns are a bit uneven in quality.
